Parts

  • Headlight switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key from ignition
  3. Allow vehicle to sit for at least 2 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable and secure away from battery post
  5. Adjust steering wheel to lowest position and fully extended for maximum access

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove lower instrument panel trim panel
Using panel removal tools, carefully pry the lower instrument panel trim panel starting at the bottom edge. Work around the perimeter to release all retaining clips. Pull panel away from instrument panel and set aside.
  2. 2
Remove instrument panel finish panel screws
Locate and remove the two screws securing the instrument panel finish panel (the panel surrounding the headlight switch). These are typically located at the top or bottom edges of the panel. Use a 10mm socket to remove the screws.
  3. 3
    Remove instrument panel finish panel
Carefully pull the instrument panel finish panel straight back to disengage the remaining retaining clips. Tilt the bottom of the panel toward you and lift upward to remove. Set panel aside in a safe location to avoid scratching.
  4. 4
    Access headlight switch mounting
With the finish panel removed, the headlight switch assembly is now visible. Note the orientation and position of the switch before removal. Use a work light to illuminate the area behind the switch for better visibility.
  5. 5
    Disconnect headlight switch electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the electrical connector at the rear of the headlight switch and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. You may need to reach behind the instrument panel to access the connector properly.
Do not force the connector. Ensure the locking tab is fully depressed before pulling.
  6. 6
    Remove headlight switch mounting fasteners
Remove the screws or bolts securing the headlight switch to the instrument panel bracket. The F-150 typically uses two mounting screws. Use a 10mm socket or appropriate driver and keep fasteners organized for reinstallation.
  7. 7
    Remove headlight switch assembly
Pull the headlight switch assembly straight back and out of the instrument panel opening. Guide the electrical connector through any routing clips or brackets as you remove the switch. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damage.
  8. 8
    Install new headlight switch assembly
Position the new headlight switch assembly in the instrument panel opening, ensuring proper orientation. Guide the electrical connector through routing clips. Align the mounting holes with the instrument panel bracket and hand-start the mounting screws.
  9. 9
    Secure headlight switch mounting fasteners
Tighten the headlight switch mounting screws evenly. If using cover screws, torque to specification. Do not overtighten as this may crack the switch housing or deform the mounting bracket.

  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Connect the electrical connector to the rear of the headlight switch. Push firmly until you hear and feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  11. 11
    Reinstall instrument panel finish panel
Position the instrument panel finish panel over the headlight switch and align all mounting points. Press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Install and tighten the two mounting screws removed earlier.

  12. 12
    Reinstall lower instrument panel trim
Align the lower instrument panel trim panel with its mounting location. Press firmly around all edges to engage the retaining clips. Verify all clips are fully seated and the panel is flush with surrounding trim.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery and initialize systems
Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Torque the battery terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten to avoid damaging the battery post or terminal.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all trim panels are properly seated with no gaps or misalignment
  2. Check that all panel clips engaged properly during installation
  3. Return steering wheel to normal driving position if adjusted

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify instrument panel illuminates
  • Test all headlight switch positions: OFF, parking lights, headlights, and auto (if equipped)
  • Verify fog lights function properly if equipped
  • Test headlight dimmer control if integrated into switch
  • Confirm instrument panel dimmer operates correctly
  • Check that headlights turn off properly when switch is returned to OFF position
  • Verify no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Test automatic headlight function if equipped by covering ambient light sensor
  • Re-initialize power windows if necessary by holding window switch up for 5 seconds after full closure
