Replace the ignition switch assembly on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost, requiring removal of steering column covers and electrical disconnection.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait 10 minutes before beginning work to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge. Failure to do so may result in accidental airbag deployment.
Do not rotate the steering wheel once the ignition switch is disconnected or removed, as this may affect clock spring alignment.
The ignition switch contains anti-theft components. Ensure the new switch is properly coded or programmed for your vehicle if applicable.
ℹ️Place the transmission in Park and apply the parking brake before beginning work.

Parts

  • Ignition switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Ford replacement clips

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground with transmission in Park and parking brake engaged
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 10 minutes
  4. Adjust steering wheel to lowest and fully extended position for maximum access
  5. Remove lower dash panel below steering column if equipped for better access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column cover
Locate and remove the screws securing the lower steering column cover using a T20 Torx bit. There are typically 2-3 screws on the underside. Gently pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing any retaining clips. Set cover and hardware aside in a safe location.
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
Remove the screws securing the upper steering column cover using a T20 Torx bit. Carefully separate the upper cover from the lower portion, working around the ignition cylinder housing. Note the position of any wiring clips attached to the cover before removal.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Locate ignition switch assembly
With covers removed, locate the ignition switch assembly on the right side of the steering column, directly behind the ignition lock cylinder. The switch is a black plastic assembly with a large electrical connector. Do not confuse this with the ignition lock cylinder itself.
  4. 4
    Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the ignition switch electrical connector and carefully pull the connector away from the switch. The connector is large (approximately 10-pin) and may require firm pressure on the tab. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage.
  5. 5
    Remove ignition switch mounting screws
Using a T25 Torx bit, remove the two screws securing the ignition switch to the steering column housing. These screws are located on the side of the switch assembly. Support the switch with one hand while removing the second screw to prevent it from falling.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove ignition switch from column
Carefully slide the ignition switch assembly away from the lock cylinder actuator rod. The switch has a slot that engages with the actuator rod from the lock cylinder. Gently wiggle the switch while pulling to disengage. Note the orientation of the switch for installation.
  7. 7
    Inspect actuator rod and housing
Examine the lock cylinder actuator rod for wear, damage, or corrosion. Check the switch mounting surface on the steering column housing for cracks or damage. Clean the mounting area with electrical contact cleaner if needed. Verify the actuator rod moves freely when the key is turned in the lock cylinder.
  8. 8
    Install new ignition switch
Position the new ignition switch with the actuator rod slot aligned to the lock cylinder rod. The key should be in the OFF position. Slide the switch onto the column housing, ensuring the actuator rod fully engages in the switch slot. The switch should sit flush against the mounting surface.
  9. 9
    Install switch mounting screws
Install the two ignition switch mounting screws and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Start both screws by hand before tightening to ensure proper thread engagement. Do not overtighten, as the switch housing is plastic and can crack.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector terminals if desired. Align the electrical connector with the ignition switch and press firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  11. 11
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover around the column, ensuring all wiring is properly routed and not pinched. Install and tighten the cover screws to specification. Install the lower cover, aligning all retaining clips, and secure with screws.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Without starting the engine, turn the ignition key through all positions (OFF, ACC, ON, START) and verify smooth operation with proper resistance. Check that all accessories function in their respective key positions. Verify the steering wheel lock engages when key is removed.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column cover clips are properly engaged before tightening screws
  2. Verify no wiring is pinched between column covers
  3. Reinstall lower dash panel if it was removed
  4. Check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked

Verification

  • Turn ignition key to each position and verify smooth operation without binding
  • Confirm accessories operate correctly in ACC position (radio, power windows)
  • Verify all warning lights illuminate in ON position before starting
  • Start the engine to confirm proper operation in START position
  • Verify steering wheel lock engages when key is removed and disengages when key is inserted
  • Test that the vehicle will not start in any gear except Park or Neutral
  • Check for proper operation of any anti-theft features
  • Confirm no warning lights related to ignition or security system remain illuminated
