This procedure replaces the PCV valve on the 3.5L EcoBoost engine to restore proper crankcase ventilation and prevent oil consumption or rough idle issues.

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove engine cover
    Grasp the engine cover firmly at the rear corners and pull straight upward to disengage the grommets from the mounting posts. The cover is held by friction-fit grommets only and requires no tools. Set the cover aside in a clean area.

    Locate PCV valve
    Identify the PCV valve on the passenger side valve cover near the firewall. It is a small cylindrical component with a hose attached to it running toward the intake manifold. The valve threads directly into a grommet in the valve cover.

    Disconnect PCV hose
    Carefully pull the PCV hose off the top of the PCV valve. The hose is retained by friction fit. If the connection is tight, gently twist while pulling to break it free. Inspect the hose end for cracks or damage and replace if necessary.

    Remove old PCV valve
    Grasp the PCV valve body firmly and rotate counterclockwise to unthread it from the valve cover grommet. If the valve is difficult to turn, use gentle rocking motions while rotating. Remove the valve completely and inspect the grommet in the valve cover for tears, hardening, or deterioration.

    Inspect and replace grommet if needed
    Examine the rubber grommet in the valve cover. If it shows cracks, tears, or has become hard and brittle, carefully pry it out using needle nose pliers or a pick tool. Press the new grommet into place ensuring it seats fully and evenly in the valve cover opening.
    A damaged grommet will cause an oil leak or vacuum leak - replace if condition is questionable

    Install new PCV valve
    Thread the new PCV valve clockwise into the valve cover grommet by hand. Ensure the valve threads smoothly without cross-threading. Tighten the valve to the specified torque. The valve should be snug but does not require excessive force - hand tight plus a slight additional turn with a wrench is typically sufficient.
    Do not overtighten the PCV valve as this can damage the grommet or the valve threads

    Reconnect PCV hose
    Push the PCV hose firmly onto the nipple of the new PCV valve until it is fully seated. Ensure the connection is secure by gently pulling on the hose - it should not come off easily. Verify the hose routing is correct and does not contact hot exhaust components or moving parts.

    Reinstall engine cover
    Align the engine cover grommet holes with the mounting posts on the engine. Press down firmly at each mounting point until all grommets snap into place. Verify the cover is secure by attempting to lift at the corners.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all hose connections are fully seated and secure
  2. Verify engine cover is properly installed on all mounting posts
  3. Confirm no tools or shop towels were left in the engine bay

Verification

  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual hissing sounds indicating a vacuum leak
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify smooth idle quality
  • Check around the PCV valve and grommet for any signs of oil seepage
  • After the first drive cycle, recheck the PCV valve for tightness and inspect hose connection
