Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting
- Raise and safely support front of vehicle on jack stands
- Allow engine and transmission to cool completely if recently driven
Procedure
- 1Remove center console componentsRemove the center console trim panel by gently prying up from the rear using a panel tool. Remove the cupholders and storage tray. Remove the screws securing the shifter bezel and lift bezel upward to expose shifter assembly.
- 2Access shifter cable connectionLocate the shift cable attachment at the base of the shifter assembly. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the cable end bushing from the shifter lever ball stud. - 4Access transmission shift leverFrom under the vehicle, locate the transmission shift lever on the driver side of the transmission. Clean the area around the cable connection to prevent contamination during removal.
- 5Disconnect cable at transmissionUse pliers to compress the cable retaining clip at the transmission shift lever. Disconnect the cable end from the transmission lever ball stud by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver. Do not damage the lever or transmission case.
- 6Remove cable bracket from transmissionRemove the bolts securing the cable bracket to the transmission case. Note the routing of the cable for installation reference. - 7Install new cable at transmissionRoute the new shift cable from the interior through the firewall grommet and down to the transmission. Ensure cable follows the original routing path and does not contact hot or moving components. - 8Connect cable to transmission leverInstall the new cable bushing onto the transmission shift lever ball stud. Snap the cable end onto the lever ensuring the retaining clip fully engages. Verify the connection is secure by pulling on the cable.
- 9Install cable at shifter assemblyFrom inside the vehicle, pull the cable through and install the cable bracket to the floor pan. Torque the cable bracket bolts to specification. Install a new bushing on the shifter lever ball stud and snap the cable end into place.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 10Adjust shift cablePlace the transmission shift lever in PARK position manually at the transmission. Place the column shifter in PARK position. Install and hand-tighten the adjustment nut at the cable bracket. - 11Reinstall interior componentsReinstall the shifter bezel, storage tray, cupholders, and center console trim panel in reverse order of removal. Ensure all clips and fasteners are properly seated.
Reassembly
- Reconnect negative battery cable
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Remove wheel chocks
Verification
- Start engine and verify shifter moves smoothly through all gear positions
- Verify transmission engages in each gear position (P, R, N, D, and manual positions)
- Confirm ignition key can only be removed when shifter is in PARK
- Verify gear position indicator matches actual shifter position for all gears
- Test drive vehicle to confirm proper shift operation and no slipping or delayed engagement
