This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the steering wheel on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, including proper airbag handling and steering position retention.
Warnings
⚠️Airbag system is active. Failure to disconnect battery and wait proper time can result in accidental deployment and serious injury.
⚠️Never use impact tools on airbag mounting bolts. Over-torque can cause airbag malfunction or unintended deployment.
⚠Wait minimum 1 minute after battery disconnection before beginning work to allow airbag backup capacitor to fully discharge.
⚠Always place removed airbag module face-up on a clean, flat surface away from work area. Never place face-down.
ℹ️Marking steering shaft and wheel position is critical for maintaining proper steering wheel alignment.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position
- Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal
- Wait minimum 1 minute for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Ensure you have radio security code if equipped with anti-theft radio

- 1Remove airbag moduleLocate the two Torx T30 bolts on the rear side of the steering wheel (accessible from behind). Remove both bolts completely. Carefully pull the airbag module straight back toward you to disengage the retaining clips. Do not pull on the wiring harness.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 2Disconnect airbag electrical connectorsLocate the two electrical connectors on the back of the airbag module: the airbag squib connector (yellow) and the horn/cruise control connector. Press the locking tabs and disconnect both connectors. Place airbag module face-up on a clean surface at least 10 feet from the vehicle.⚠Always store airbag module face-up. Never place tools or objects on top of airbag module.
- 3Mark steering wheel positionUse a marker or tape to mark the relationship between the steering wheel and the steering column shaft. Make alignment marks on both the wheel hub and the shaft in at least two locations to ensure proper reinstallation alignment. This is critical for maintaining centered steering.ℹ️Take a photo of the alignment marks as backup reference before proceeding.
- 4Disconnect remaining electrical connectorsDisconnect any remaining electrical connectors behind the steering wheel including audio controls, paddle shifter connectors (if equipped), and heated steering wheel connector (if equipped). Note the routing and position of all wiring for reassembly.
- 5Remove steering wheel retaining nutUsing a 19mm socket, remove the steering wheel retaining nut from the center of the steering column. Keep this nut as it may be reused if not damaged. Note: Ford recommends replacing this bolt during reassembly.Torque specSteering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
- 6Remove steering wheel from columnFirmly grip the steering wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock positions. Pull the wheel straight back off the splined shaft while rocking slightly side-to-side if needed. If the wheel is stuck, use a proper steering wheel puller - never strike the wheel or column. Route the clockspring connector through the wheel as you remove it.⚠Do not rotate the clockspring mechanism once the steering wheel is removed. Secure it with tape if necessary to prevent rotation.
- 7Inspect clockspring and steering componentsWith the steering wheel removed, inspect the clockspring for any damage, cracks, or wear. Verify the clockspring is centered (look for centering window or marks). Inspect the steering shaft splines for damage or wear. Clean the splines with a wire brush if necessary.ℹ️If clockspring appears damaged or has lost center position, it must be replaced and centered before wheel installation.
- 8Install new or cleaned steering wheelRoute the clockspring connector through the center of the new/cleaned steering wheel. Align the steering wheel splines with the alignment marks made earlier. Slide the wheel onto the column shaft ensuring proper engagement. The wheel should slide on smoothly with minimal resistance.⚠Verify front wheels are still pointed straight ahead before installing wheel. Misalignment will result in off-center steering wheel.
- 9Install and torque steering wheel nutThread the new steering wheel retaining nut onto the steering column shaft by hand. Using a torque wrench and 19mm socket, torque the nut to specification. - 10Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect all electrical connectors behind the steering wheel in reverse order of removal: heated steering wheel (if equipped), audio controls, paddle shifters (if equipped), and horn/cruise control. Ensure all connectors are fully seated and locked. Verify proper wire routing with no pinch points.
- 11Install airbag moduleConnect the yellow airbag squib connector and horn/cruise connector to the back of the airbag module. Ensure both connectors click into place. Carefully align the airbag module with the steering wheel mounting points and push firmly until retaining clips engage.⚠Ensure no wiring is pinched between airbag module and steering wheel during installation.
- 12Install airbag mounting boltsThread both Torx T30 airbag mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading. Using a hand torque wrench (never an impact tool), torque both bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern. Do not exceed specified torque.⚠️Never use power tools on airbag bolts. - 13Reconnect battery and testReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Verify the airbag warning light illuminates briefly then turns off (approximately 6 seconds). If light stays on or flashes, there is a fault that must be diagnosed before driving.⚠Do not operate vehicle if airbag warning light remains illuminated. This indicates a system fault requiring immediate diagnosis.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are properly seated and locked
- Confirm airbag module mounting bolts are torqued to specification
- Check that steering wheel is centered with wheels in straight-ahead position
- Ensure no wiring is pinched or improperly routed behind steering wheel
- Re-enter radio security code if applicable
Verification
- Start engine and verify steering wheel remains centered while driving straight
- Confirm airbag warning light turns off within 6 seconds of ignition ON
- Test horn function by pressing center of steering wheel
- Verify all steering wheel controls function properly (cruise, audio, paddle shifters if equipped)
- Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock to verify no binding or unusual noises
- Confirm heated steering wheel functions if equipped
