This procedure covers the replacement of both front sway bar links (stabilizer bar links) on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine and 4WD.
Warnings
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use properly rated jack stands.
⚠Sway bar links may be under tension. Control the sway bar when removing links to prevent sudden movement.
ℹ️Corroded fasteners may require penetrating oil and additional time for removal.

- Front sway bar link (stabilizer link) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground (do not remove)
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at manufacturer-specified jacking points
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands at frame rails
- Remove both front wheels completely
Procedure
- 1Inspect sway bar link conditionExamine both front sway bar links for worn ball joints, torn boots, or damaged threads. Note the orientation of the link and any washers or sleeves between the link and mounting points. Take photos if needed for reference during reassembly.
- 2Apply penetrating oil (if needed)If fasteners show signs of corrosion, spray penetrating oil on both the upper nut (connecting to strut) and lower nut (connecting to sway bar) on each side. Allow 10-15 minutes for penetration before attempting removal.
- 3Remove driver side upper nutLocate the sway bar link connection to the strut assembly. Insert a 6mm Allen key into the hex socket at the top of the link shaft to prevent rotation. Using an 18mm wrench, remove the upper nut. Note the position of any washers or bushings.
- 4Remove driver side lower nutLocate the lower connection where the sway bar link attaches to the sway bar. Insert the 6mm Allen key into the bottom hex socket of the link shaft. Using an 18mm wrench, remove the lower nut. Support the link to prevent it from falling. Remove any washers or bushings and keep them organized.
- 5Remove driver side sway bar linkPull the sway bar link downward and away from the strut and sway bar. If the link is seized in the mounting points, carefully tap it with a rubber mallet to break it free. Clean the mounting areas on both the strut and sway bar using a wire brush.
- 6Install new driver side sway bar linkPosition the new sway bar link between the sway bar and strut. Ensure the link is oriented correctly with the ball joint studs facing the proper direction. Install any washers or bushings in the correct order as noted during disassembly. Thread both upper and lower nuts onto the studs by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- 7Torque driver side sway bar link fastenersHold the link shaft with the 6mm Allen key to prevent rotation. Using a torque wrench and 18mm socket, tighten both the upper nut (to strut) and lower nut (to sway bar) to specification. - 8Remove passenger side sway bar linkRepeat steps 3-5 for the passenger side. Use the 6mm Allen key to hold the shaft while removing both upper and lower nuts with the 18mm wrench. Remove the old link and clean mounting surfaces.
- 9Install and torque passenger side sway bar linkPosition the new passenger side sway bar link and install both nuts by hand. Hold the shaft with the 6mm Allen key and torque both upper and lower nuts to specification using the same two-stage method as the driver side.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 10Verify installationVisually inspect both sway bar links to ensure they are properly seated in the mounting points with no binding or misalignment. Check that all fasteners are tight and that the ball joint boots are not torn or pinched. Verify that the sway bar can move freely through its range of motion without interference.
Reassembly
- Reinstall both front wheels and thread lug nuts by hand
- Lower vehicle from jack stands until wheels contact ground but vehicle weight is not fully on wheels
- Torque wheel lug nuts in star pattern to 150 lb-ft (203 Nm)
- Completely lower vehicle and remove jack stands and floor jack
- Remove wheel chocks
Verification
- Test drive vehicle at low speed over small bumps to verify no clunking noises from front suspension
- Perform figure-eight turns in a parking lot to check for binding or unusual noises during body roll
- Re-check sway bar link nut torque after 50-100 miles of driving
- Inspect for any signs of looseness or play in the new links by pushing up and down on the front bumper and listening for noise
