This procedure replaces the driver's airbag module in the steering wheel of a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 5.0L V8, requiring battery disconnection and proper handling of safety restraint system components.

Warnings

⚠️Airbag system malfunction can cause death or serious injury. If you are not completely confident in performing this procedure, seek professional service immediately.
⚠️Battery MUST be disconnected for minimum 2 minutes before touching any airbag components to allow backup capacitor discharge. Failure to wait can cause airbag deployment.
⚠️Never use electrical test equipment on airbag circuits. Never apply power to airbag module. This can cause inadvertent deployment.
⚠️Always place removed airbag module face-UP on a clean, flat surface away from work area. Face-down placement can cause airbag to become a projectile if accidentally deployed.
Airbag modules contain explosive charges. Do not expose to heat above 200°F, electric shock, or impact. Do not disassemble airbag module.
Incorrect torque on airbag module bolts can prevent proper deployment or cause unwanted deployment. Use calibrated torque wrench.
ℹ️This procedure will disable vehicle operation during repair. Ensure vehicle is in safe location with parking brake applied.
ℹ️New airbag modules come with shipping locks or pins. Remove all shipping devices before installation.

Parts

  • Driver airbag module × 1 — Use OEM Ford part matching VIN
  • Airbag connector position assurance clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from ignition
  3. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position
  4. Wait for all vehicle systems to fully power down (minimum 30 seconds)
  5. Open hood and locate battery in engine compartment
  6. Prepare a clean, padded work surface at least 3 feet from the vehicle for placing removed airbag module

Procedure

  1. 1
Disconnect battery and wait for system discharge
Using 10mm wrench, loosen and remove the negative battery cable from the battery terminal. Secure cable away from battery post to prevent accidental reconnection. Start a timer and wait a MINIMUM of 2 minutes to allow airbag system backup capacitor to fully discharge. Do not proceed until full 2 minutes have elapsed.
  2. 2
    Access airbag module retaining bolts
Enter vehicle cabin and adjust seat rearward for working room. Locate two small holes on the left and right sides of the steering wheel behind the spokes (at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions). These holes provide access to the airbag module retaining bolts.
  3. 3
    Remove airbag module retaining bolts
Insert Torx T30 bit through the access hole on driver's side of steering wheel. Locate the retaining bolt head and rotate counterclockwise approximately 5-6 full turns until bolt is completely loose but still captured in the airbag module. Repeat for passenger side access hole. The bolts are designed to remain captive in the airbag module and will not come out completely.
Ensure full 2 minutes have elapsed since battery disconnection before touching airbag components.

    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  4. 4
Remove airbag module from steering wheel
With both bolts loosened, carefully pull the airbag module straight back toward you away from the steering wheel. It will separate from the steering wheel with moderate force. Support the airbag module with both hands and rotate it to access the rear electrical connectors. Do not pull on any wiring.
⚠️Keep airbag module pointed away from your body and face during removal.
  5. 5
    Disconnect airbag electrical connectors
Locate the two electrical connectors on the back of the airbag module (one for airbag circuit, one for horn). Each connector has a position assurance clip (usually red or orange). Slide each position assurance clip outward to unlock position. Press the connector release tab and pull connector straight out from airbag module. Repeat for second connector. Note the orientation and routing of connectors for reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Secure removed airbag module
Immediately carry the removed airbag module to your prepared clean work surface. Place the airbag module FACE-UP (trim cover facing up toward ceiling) on the padded surface. Never place face-down. Store at least 3 feet away from work area, away from heat sources, electrical equipment, and impact hazards. Keep module in this position until disposal or storage.
⚠️Airbag module MUST be placed face-up. Face-down placement can cause serious injury if accidental deployment occurs.
  7. 7
Inspect steering wheel and clock spring
With airbag removed, visually inspect the clock spring (yellow spiral cable assembly visible behind steering wheel) for damage, cracks, or exposed wiring. Verify steering wheel position has not changed from straight-ahead. Inspect airbag module mounting points on steering wheel for cracks or damage. Clean any debris from mounting surface with lint-free cloth.
Do not rotate steering wheel with airbag removed or clock spring can be damaged. If wheel must be turned, reinstall steering wheel nut first.
  8. 8
    Prepare new airbag module
Remove new airbag module from packaging. Inspect for any shipping locks, pins, or protective covers that must be removed before installation. Check that the module is correct part number for your vehicle by comparing to old module. Verify electrical connectors on new module match old module configuration.
  9. 9
Connect electrical connectors to new airbag module
Position new airbag module near steering wheel. Route the two electrical connectors (airbag and horn) from the clock spring to the back of the new airbag module. Align each connector with its corresponding receptacle on airbag module and push straight in until you hear/feel a positive click. Slide each position assurance clip fully inward to locked position. Gently tug on each connector to verify secure engagement.
  10. 10
Install airbag module to steering wheel
Carefully guide the airbag module connectors and wiring into the steering wheel cavity while aligning the airbag module with the mounting points on the steering wheel. Ensure no wiring is pinched or kinked. Press airbag module firmly against steering wheel until it seats flush. Verify alignment of the two retaining bolt holes.
  11. 11
    Torque airbag module retaining bolts
Insert Torx T30 bit through the access hole on driver's side of steering wheel. Using calibrated torque wrench, tighten the captive retaining bolt to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). Repeat for passenger side retaining bolt to same specification. This is a CRITICAL torque specification - must be exact for proper airbag function and safety.
⚠️Airbag module bolt torque is safety-critical. Under-torque can allow airbag to separate during deployment. Over-torque can damage mounting threads. Use calibrated torque wrench.

    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery
Exit vehicle and return to engine compartment. Reconnect negative battery cable to negative battery terminal. Tighten battery terminal bolt securely. Ensure good electrical contact and cable cannot be pulled off by hand.
  13. 13
Clear airbag codes and verify system
Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Observe the airbag warning light on instrument cluster. The light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds during bulb check, then extinguish. If light remains on, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, do not drive vehicle - there is a fault in the airbag system requiring scan tool diagnosis.
Ensure no people or objects are near the steering wheel when first powering up the system after airbag replacement.

Reassembly

  1. Verify airbag module is flush-mounted to steering wheel with no gaps
  2. Confirm both electrical connectors are fully engaged with position assurance clips locked
  3. Test horn function by pressing horn button - should sound normally
  4. Return driver's seat to normal operating position

Verification

  • With ignition ON, airbag warning light should illuminate for 6 seconds then extinguish completely - this indicates system passed self-test
  • No airbag warning light flashing or staying illuminated continuously
  • Horn operates normally when pressed
  • Airbag module sits flush with steering wheel with no gaps or movement when pressed
  • If airbag warning light does not behave correctly, vehicle requires professional scan tool diagnosis - do not drive until resolved
  • After first test drive, re-verify airbag warning light behavior - should remain off during normal operation
