Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a single fuel injector on the 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, including fuel system depressurization and fuel rail removal.

Warnings

⚠️Gasoline is highly flammable. Ensure adequate ventilation and no ignition sources in work area.
⚠️Fuel system operates at high pressure (40-60 psi). Failure to relieve pressure before disconnecting lines will result in fuel spray.
Do not work on fuel system with hot engine. Allow engine to cool completely to avoid burns and fuel vapor ignition.
Fuel will spill during injector removal. Have drain pan and absorbent materials ready.

Parts

  • Fuel injector × 1 — Use OEM specification for 5.0L Coyote
  • Fuel injector O-ring kit × 1 — Upper and lower O-rings
  • Fuel line O-rings × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours after operation)
  3. Ensure fire extinguisher is accessible in work area
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental starter engagement
  5. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on front edge, then lifting off mounting grommets

Procedure

  1. 1
    Relieve fuel system pressure
Locate the fuel pressure relief valve (Schrader valve) on the fuel rail. Attach fuel pressure gauge with drain hose into container. Slowly open valve to bleed pressure until gauge reads zero. Close valve and remove gauge. Residual pressure may remain, so have towels ready for next steps.
  2. 2
    Disconnect fuel supply line
Locate the fuel supply line connection on the driver side fuel rail. Use appropriate fuel line disconnect tool to release the quick-connect fitting. Press the tool into the fitting while pulling the line away from the rail. Have shop towels ready to catch residual fuel. Cap the open line to prevent contamination.
Residual fuel will drain from line and rail. Keep drain pan positioned underneath.
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Identify which injector requires replacement (cylinders are numbered 1-4 passenger side front to back, 5-8 driver side front to back). Disconnect the electrical connector from the target injector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight up. If removing injectors that require fuel rail repositioning, disconnect all injector connectors on the affected bank.
  4. 4
    Remove vacuum lines and brackets
Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose and any PCV hoses attached to the intake manifold that obstruct access to fuel rail bolts. Remove or reposition any wiring harness brackets attached to the fuel rail mounting bolts. Note positions for reassembly.
  5. 5
    Remove fuel rail mounting bolts
Locate the four fuel rail mounting bolts (two per rail). For single injector replacement, you may only need to remove bolts from the affected bank. Using 8mm socket, remove all mounting bolts for the affected fuel rail. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Fuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove fuel rail assembly
Carefully pull the fuel rail straight up and away from the intake manifold. The injectors will come out with the rail. Work the rail gently side to side if injectors are stuck in their bores. Do not pry against intake manifold surfaces. Once free, lay rail on clean shop towel with injectors facing up.
Fuel will drain from injectors and rail. Position drain pan to catch spillage.
  7. 7
    Remove failed injector from rail
Locate the retaining clip securing the injector to the fuel rail. Use flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the clip away from the injector, then slide it off. Twist the injector gently while pulling it out of the fuel rail. Remove and discard both upper and lower O-rings from the old injector.
  8. 8
    Prepare new injector
Inspect new injector for any damage or debris. Lubricate the new upper and lower O-rings with clean engine oil or petroleum jelly. Install the lower O-ring (larger one) into the groove nearest the injector tip. Install the upper O-ring into the groove near the electrical connector end.
  9. 9
Install new injector into fuel rail
Align the new injector with the fuel rail bore and push it straight in until it seats completely. The injector should sit flush with the rail mounting surface. Install the retaining clip by sliding it over the injector body until it clicks into place, securing the injector to the rail.
  10. 10
    Inspect and clean injector bores
Before reinstalling the fuel rail, inspect the injector bores in the intake manifold for debris, old O-ring material, or carbon buildup. Clean bores with shop towel if necessary. Ensure bores are dry and free of contamination.
  11. 11
    Reinstall fuel rail assembly
Carefully align all injectors with their respective bores in the intake manifold. Press the rail down evenly, ensuring all injectors enter their bores simultaneously. Push firmly until the rail mounting feet contact the manifold. Do not force or cock the rail at an angle.
  12. 12
    Install fuel rail mounting bolts
Install all fuel rail mounting bolts hand-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Using torque wrench and 8mm socket, tighten bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of all injectors.
    Torque spec
    Fuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Reconnect fuel supply line
Install new O-rings on the fuel supply line quick-connect fitting if provided in kit. Push the fuel line straight onto the fuel rail fitting until you hear and feel a positive click. Gently tug on the line to verify it is locked in place.
ℹ️Always use new O-rings when reconnecting fuel lines to prevent leaks.
  14. 14
    Reconnect electrical and vacuum connections
Reconnect the electrical connector to the new injector, ensuring it clicks into place. Reconnect all other injector connectors if they were removed. Reinstall vacuum hoses and wiring harness brackets in their original positions.
  15. 15
Prime fuel system and check for leaks
Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition key to ON position (do not start engine) for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat this cycle 3-4 times to prime the fuel system. Inspect all fuel connections for leaks. Wipe any spilled fuel and check again. Once no leaks are observed, start engine and verify no leaks occur under running pressure.
⚠️Inspect entire work area for fuel leaks before starting engine. Any leak under pressure can cause fire.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning mounting grommets and pressing down firmly until seated
  2. Verify all tools and parts have been removed from engine bay
  3. Clean any spilled fuel from engine components and surrounding area with shop towels

Verification

  • Start engine and let idle for 2-3 minutes while monitoring for fuel leaks at rail connections and injector seals
  • Check for smooth idle with no misfires (rough running or check engine light)
  • Scan for diagnostic trouble codes using OBD-II scanner to confirm no injector circuit faults
  • Test drive vehicle and verify normal acceleration and performance
  • Recheck all fuel connections for leaks after test drive when system is at full operating pressure
