    Drain engine oil
Remove oil drain plug and allow oil to drain completely. Remove oil filter from passenger side of engine block. Once drained, reinstall drain plug with new crush washer to specified torque.
    Torque spec
    Oil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
  2. 2
Remove front wheels and disconnect steering linkage
Remove both front wheels. Disconnect outer tie rod ends from steering knuckles using appropriate tool. Mark relationship of drag link to Pitman arm, then disconnect drag link. Support steering gear to prevent strain on lines.
  3. 3
    Support engine from above
Install engine support fixture across fender rails or position engine hoist with load leveler attached to engine lifting eyes. Take up slight tension on engine weight but do not lift. This will support the engine when subframe is lowered.
Engine support must be secure and stable. Verify all connections before proceeding.
  4. 4
Disconnect front differential and transmission cooler lines
Disconnect front driveshaft from front differential. Disconnect front differential vent tube. Support front differential with transmission jack. Remove front differential mounting bolts and lower differential enough to access transmission cooler lines. Disconnect transmission cooler lines at radiator and cap all openings to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
Mark all transmission cooler line positions before removal for correct reassembly routing.
  5. 5
Support and mark front subframe position
Place two floor jacks with wood blocks under front subframe crossmember on each side. Using paint marker or scribe, mark exact position of subframe mounting bolts relative to frame for alignment during reassembly. This is critical for maintaining proper alignment.
Accurate marking of subframe position is essential for proper wheel alignment and handling after reassembly.
  6. 6
    Lower front subframe
Remove all four front subframe mounting bolts while supporting subframe with floor jacks. Carefully and evenly lower subframe approximately 4-5 inches. Lower only enough to provide clearance for oil pan removal. Verify engine support is holding weight and engine is stable.
⚠️Lower subframe slowly and evenly. Check for any wiring, hoses, or lines that may become strained as subframe lowers.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove oil pump pickup tube
From underneath vehicle, locate oil pump pickup tube attached to oil pump inside oil pan. Remove mounting bolts securing pickup tube to oil pump. Carefully lower pickup tube into oil pan. Note orientation and position for reassembly.
    Torque spec
    Oil Pump Pickup Tube12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  8. 8
Remove oil pan bolts and pan
Remove all oil pan mounting bolts in reverse of tightening sequence (work from outside edges toward center). Carefully break oil pan seal using plastic gasket scraper or pry tool at designated pry points only. Do not pry between sealing surfaces. Lower oil pan and pickup tube assembly carefully, tilting as needed to clear subframe and steering components.
Do not use metal tools on gasket sealing surfaces. Damage to sealing surfaces will cause oil leaks.
  9. 9
    Clean all sealing surfaces
Remove all old gasket material from oil pan and engine block sealing surfaces using plastic scraper. Clean surfaces thoroughly with brake cleaner and lint-free rags. Inspect oil pan for cracks or damage. Check pickup tube O-ring and replace if worn or damaged. Ensure all bolt holes are clean and free of debris.
  10. 10
Install new gasket and position oil pan
Install new oil pan gasket onto oil pan. Most gaskets are self-adhesive. Install oil pump pickup tube into oil pan with new O-ring if required, but do not fully tighten at this stage. Carefully raise oil pan and pickup tube assembly into position, aligning pickup tube with oil pump mounting points.
  11. 11
    Install oil pump pickup tube
Align oil pump pickup tube to oil pump mounting boss. Install and tighten pickup tube mounting bolts to specified torque. Verify pickup tube is properly seated and oriented correctly before proceeding.
    Torque spec
    Oil Pump Pickup Tube12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
Install and torque oil pan bolts
Install all oil pan bolts finger tight. Following manufacturer tightening sequence (start at center and work outward in crisscross pattern), tighten all oil pan bolts to specified torque in multiple stages: first to 6 Nm, then to final 12 Nm. This ensures even gasket compression and prevents leaks.
Over-tightening oil pan bolts can warp the pan and cause leaks. Use calibrated torque wrench and follow sequence precisely.
    Torque spec
    Oil Pan Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Raise and align front subframe
Using floor jacks, carefully raise front subframe back to original position. Align subframe mounting bolt holes with marks made during disassembly. Install all four subframe mounting bolts and tighten to specified torque in crisscross pattern.

  14. 14
Reconnect front differential and cooler lines
Raise front differential into position and install mounting bolts to specified torque. Reconnect transmission cooler lines ensuring correct routing per marks made during removal. Reconnect front differential vent tube and front driveshaft.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
  15. 15
    Reconnect steering and install wheels
Reconnect drag link to Pitman arm per alignment marks. Reconnect outer tie rod ends to steering knuckles. Install both front wheels. Remove engine support fixture. Lower vehicle to ground and perform final torque on wheel lug nuts.
  16. 16
Refill engine oil and check for leaks
Install new oil filter and tighten per filter instructions. Fill engine with 7.5 quarts of Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend engine oil. Reconnect negative battery cable. Start engine and verify oil pressure. Check for leaks around oil pan, pickup tube, drain plug, and oil filter. Let engine run for 5 minutes, then shut off and recheck oil level after 5 minute settling period.

Reassembly

  1. All torque specifications must be followed exactly as specified
  2. Oil pan bolt tightening sequence is critical and must be followed in multiple stages
  3. Verify all transmission cooler lines are routed correctly and secured
  4. Check that front subframe is properly aligned to original position before final torquing
  5. Verify steering linkage connections are tight and properly aligned

Verification

  • Start engine and verify normal oil pressure on gauge within 2-3 seconds
  • Check for oil leaks around entire oil pan perimeter, drain plug, and oil filter while engine is running
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and recheck for leaks
  • Shut off engine, wait 5 minutes, and verify oil level is at full mark on dipstick
  • Test drive vehicle and verify normal steering operation and no unusual handling
  • After test drive, recheck oil level and inspect oil pan area for any signs of leakage
  • Schedule front end alignment check within 100 miles to verify subframe alignment
