Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable and isolate
  3. Relieve fuel system pressure by removing fuel pump fuse and running engine until it stalls
  4. Drain engine coolant completely into appropriate container
  5. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter
  6. Remove engine cover and air intake system

    Rotate engine so pistons are at bottom dead center. Inspect top of each cylinder bore for ridge wear. Use ridge reamer to carefully remove ridge from each cylinder, following tool manufacturer instructions. Do not remove more material than necessary. Clean cylinders thoroughly after reaming.
    Failure to remove cylinder ridge before removing pistons can break piston rings or damage pistons.

    Mark and remove connecting rod caps
    Mark each connecting rod and cap with cylinder number (1-8) using permanent marker or stamps. Ensure marks are on the same side for proper orientation. Remove connecting rod bolts from all cylinders. Keep caps with their respective rods.
    Connecting rods and caps are machined as matched pairs. Mixing caps between rods will cause bearing failure.

    Remove piston and rod assemblies
    Push each piston/rod assembly up and out through the top of the cylinder bore. Guide the rod carefully to avoid scratching cylinder walls or crankshaft journals. Keep each piston with its connecting rod and bearing shells. Place assemblies in order on clean work surface.

    Inspect crankshaft and measure cylinders
    Measure each cylinder bore diameter at top, middle, and bottom in two perpendicular directions using bore gauge. Record all measurements.
