This procedure replaces the sunroof switch assembly located in the overhead console of a 2011-2014 Ford F-150, restoring sunroof control functionality.

Warnings

Disconnect battery negative terminal before beginning work to prevent accidental airbag deployment or electrical shorts
ℹ️The overhead console contains the dome lights and may have sharp edges behind trim panels

Tools required

Trim panel removal tool setEssential
Small flat-blade screwdriver
Ratchet with 8mm socket
Torque wrench (5-15 Nm range)

Parts

  • Sunroof switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
  • Overhead console trim clips (if damaged) × 4 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn ignition off
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
  3. Ensure sunroof is in closed position before beginning work
  4. Gather all tools and replacement parts

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove overhead console lens cover
Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry the front edge of the overhead console lens cover near the dome light. Release the retaining clips by gently pulling downward. Work from front to back, releasing all clips around the perimeter. The lens cover should come free once all clips are disengaged.
  2. 2
    Disconnect dome light wiring
Locate the dome light electrical connector behind the lens cover. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight down to disconnect. If equipped with map lights, disconnect those connectors as well using the same method. Set the lens cover aside in a safe location.
  3. 3
    Remove overhead console retaining screws
Locate the two or three Phillips head screws securing the overhead console to the headliner. Remove these screws completely and set aside. On some models, there may be additional screws near the sunroof opening.
  4. 4
    Lower overhead console assembly
Carefully pull the overhead console assembly downward, tilting the front edge down first. You will need to lower it approximately 2-3 inches to access the sunroof switch connections. Do not pull too hard as wiring harnesses are still connected.
  5. 5
    Disconnect sunroof switch electrical connector
Locate the sunroof switch electrical connector on the back of the switch assembly. Press down on the locking tab (typically red or gray) while pulling the connector straight back. The connector should release with moderate pressure. If difficult to access, you may need to lower the console further.
  6. 6
    Remove sunroof switch from console
The sunroof switch is retained by two small tabs or clips on either side. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to depress these tabs while pushing the switch out from the front. The switch should pop out of the console housing. Note the orientation of the switch for installation of the replacement.
  7. 7
    Install new sunroof switch
Take the new sunroof switch and orient it the same direction as the original. Insert the switch into the console housing from the front, pressing firmly until the retaining tabs click into place on both sides. Verify the switch is flush with the console surface and secure.
  8. 8
    Reconnect sunroof switch electrical connector
Plug the electrical connector back into the new sunroof switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  9. 9
    Reinstall overhead console assembly
Carefully raise the overhead console back into position, aligning the screw holes with the headliner mounting points. Ensure no wiring is pinched between the console and headliner. Install the retaining screws and tighten to secure the console. If torque specification applies, use proper torque wrench.

  10. 10
Reconnect dome light wiring and install lens cover
Reconnect all dome light and map light electrical connectors by pressing them straight into their sockets until they click. Position the lens cover over the console and press firmly around all edges to engage the retaining clips. Verify the cover is flush and secure.
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery and initialize
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and wait for all systems to initialize. The sunroof switch should illuminate if equipped with backlighting.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim clips are fully engaged and the overhead console is flush with the headliner
  2. Verify no gaps exist between the lens cover and console housing
  3. Confirm all electrical connectors are locked in place with no loose wiring

Verification

  • Test sunroof operation in all positions: vent, open, close using the new switch
  • Verify sunroof switch backlighting functions when headlights are on
  • Test one-touch open and close functions if equipped
  • Confirm dome lights and map lights operate correctly
  • Check for proper switch tactile feedback and click when pressing
  • Ensure no rattles or loose components in overhead console area
