This procedure replaces the torque converter clutch solenoid in the 6R80 transmission, which requires removing the transmission pan and valve body to access the solenoid.
Warnings
⚠Transmission fluid will be hot if vehicle was recently driven. Allow at least 2 hours cool-down time.
⚠️Ensure vehicle is properly supported on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.

- 5Disconnect electrical connectorsDisconnect all solenoid electrical connectors from the internal wiring harness. Press the release tabs and pull connectors straight out. Note the orientation and routing of the harness for reassembly.
- 6Lower valve bodyCarefully lower the valve body assembly. Support it with one hand while removing the last bolts. Be extremely careful as the valve body may have loose check balls or springs that can fall out. Place the valve body on a clean work surface with the solenoid side facing up.⚠Do not flip or shake the valve body as internal check balls and springs can be dislodged.
- 7Locate torque converter clutch solenoidThe TCC solenoid is typically located on the valve body assembly. It is electronically controlled and will have an electrical connector. Identify the solenoid by tracing the harness or referring to a diagram.
- 8Remove TCC solenoidRemove the bolts or retaining clips securing the TCC solenoid to the valve body. Carefully pull the solenoid straight out. Inspect the O-rings and sealing surfaces for damage. - 14Fill transmission with fluidLower the vehicle. Fill the transmission with the specified amount of Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF through the dipstick tube or fill plug. Start with approximately 6-7 quarts, then check level after warming up. Use a transmission fluid pump or long funnel.
- 15Initial startup and level checkReconnect the battery. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. With the engine running and transmission in Park, check the fluid level on the dipstick. The fluid should be in the crosshatch area when hot. Add fluid as needed to bring to proper level. Cycle through all gear positions 2-3 times, then recheck level.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify transmission pan is not leaking after initial startup
- Reinstall skid plate if equipped
- Tighten all fasteners to specified torque values
Verification
- Check for fluid leaks around the transmission pan after test drive
- Verify transmission shifts smoothly through all gears
- Confirm torque converter lockup occurs (typically felt as a smooth engagement at highway speeds around 45-50 mph)
- Scan for diagnostic trouble codes using OBD-II scanner to confirm no TCC-related codes are present
- Recheck transmission fluid level when fully warmed up and adjust as necessary
