Preparation

    Locate the internal transmission filter which is secured to the valve body. Remove filter retaining bolts and carefully pull filter straight down to remove. This ensures even gasket compression and proper valve body seating. Verify all bolts are tightened and no bolts were missed.

    Fill transmission with fluid
    Lower vehicle to ground. Locate transmission dipstick tube and remove dipstick. Using long-neck funnel, add approximately 5 quarts of Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF initially. Start engine and allow to idle. With engine running and transmission in Park, check fluid level. Add additional fluid in 1-quart increments until fluid level reaches cold minimum mark on dipstick. Total capacity is approximately 11 quarts but amount needed depends on what drained.
    Do not overfill transmission. Overfilling causes foaming, overheating, and potential damage. Add fluid gradually and check frequently.

    Perform fluid level check and transmission relearn
    With engine at operating temperature (approximately 70-80°C transmission fluid temperature), shift through all gear positions pausing 3 seconds in each position.
