This procedure covers the replacement of a single Variable Valve Timing (VVT) solenoid on the 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, typically addressing performance issues or diagnostic trouble codes related to camshaft timing.
Warnings
⚠Perform this work only when the engine is completely cold to prevent burns from hot components.
⚠VVT solenoids contain residual engine oil; have a drain pan or towels ready to catch spillage.
ℹ️The 5.0L Coyote has four VVT solenoids total (two per bank). Identify the correct solenoid based on your diagnostic trouble code before starting.

Parts
- VVT solenoid (intake or exhaust as needed) × 1 — Use OEM Motorcraft specification
- VVT solenoid O-ring seal × 1 — Usually included with solenoid
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
- Determine which VVT solenoid needs replacement (driver side bank has intake/exhaust, passenger side bank has intake/exhaust)
- For passenger side access, you may need to remove the engine cover by pulling upward on the retaining clips
- Clear working area around valve cover on the affected bank
Procedure
- 1Locate the target VVT solenoidThe VVT solenoids are mounted on the front of each cylinder head near the timing chain area. Intake solenoids are typically positioned toward the top, exhaust solenoids toward the bottom. Verify you have identified the correct solenoid based on your diagnostic code (P0011, P0012, P0021, P0022, etc.).
- 2Disconnect the electrical connectorPress down on the locking tab of the electrical connector attached to the VVT solenoid and pull straight back to disconnect. Some connectors may have a safety clip that needs to be lifted first. Do not pull on the wiring itself.
- 3Remove any obstructing componentsDepending on which solenoid you're replacing, you may need to move aside wiring harnesses, vacuum lines, or ignition coil harnesses. Use care not to disconnect anything unnecessarily. For passenger side access, the intake manifold may partially obstruct access but removal is typically not required.
- 4Remove the VVT solenoid boltUsing an 8mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the VVT solenoid to the cylinder head. Keep this bolt as it will be reused unless damaged.Torque specVVT Solenoid Bolt10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 5Extract the VVT solenoidCarefully pull the solenoid straight out from the cylinder head. It may require a slight twisting motion to break the O-ring seal. Be prepared for a small amount of engine oil to drain from the solenoid bore. Catch any oil with a shop towel or drain pan.⚠Do not pry against the cylinder head or valve cover as this can cause damage. If the solenoid is stuck, gently twist while pulling.
- 6Inspect the solenoid bore and screenLook into the bore where the solenoid was mounted. Check for debris, metal particles, or excessive sludge. If present, this indicates an oil system issue that should be addressed. Some solenoids have a small filter screen that can be inspected or cleaned if accessible.
- 7Prepare the new VVT solenoidRemove the new VVT solenoid from its packaging. Verify the O-ring seal is properly seated in the groove on the solenoid body. Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil to the O-ring to aid installation and prevent damage.
- 8Install the new VVT solenoidCarefully insert the new solenoid straight into the bore in the cylinder head. Push firmly until it seats completely flush against the mounting surface. Do not force it; if resistance is felt, remove and check for obstructions or misalignment of the O-ring.
- 9Install and torque the solenoid boltThread the VVT solenoid bolt by hand to ensure proper alignment, then tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Over-torquing can strip the threads in the aluminum cylinder head.⚠The VVT solenoid bolt torque is only 10 Nm (7 lb-ft). Use a proper torque wrench to avoid stripping the threads.Torque specVVT Solenoid Bolt10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect the electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the new VVT solenoid until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place. Reinstall any safety clips if equipped.
- 11Reinstall any displaced componentsReturn any wiring harnesses, vacuum lines, or other components to their original positions. Ensure no wires are pinched or routed incorrectly. Reinstall the engine cover if it was removed.
- 12Reconnect battery and clear codesReconnect the negative battery terminal. Use a scan tool to clear any stored diagnostic trouble codes related to the VVT system. This ensures you can properly verify the repair during testing.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify the VVT solenoid bolt is torqued to specification
- Confirm no tools or parts were left in the engine bay
- Double-check that all displaced components are properly reinstalled
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2-3 minutes while monitoring for unusual noises or oil leaks around the VVT solenoid
- Check for oil seepage around the solenoid mounting point; a small amount of initial seepage may occur but should stop quickly
- Use a scan tool to verify no new VVT-related diagnostic codes are present
- Perform a test drive and monitor engine performance, especially during acceleration and deceleration where VVT operation is most noticeable
- After test drive, recheck for oil leaks around the solenoid and verify the repair resolved the original symptom or code
