This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the dimmer switch (multi-function switch) on the steering column of a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn steering wheel to center position and note alignment
3. Turn ignition off and remove key/fob from vehicle
4. Open driver's door and leave it open for access
5. Allow vehicle to sit for at least 30 minutes if recently driven to ensure no residual electrical charge

Procedure

   Disconnect battery
   Open the hood and locate the battery. Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative (-) battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal. Wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding to allow the airbag system to fully discharge.

   Remove lower steering column covers
   From inside the vehicle, locate the two-piece plastic steering column cover. Using a Torx T20 driver, remove the two screws at the bottom of the lower steering column cover. Gently pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing any retaining clips. Set the lower cover aside.

   Remove upper steering column cover
   With the lower cover removed, locate the fasteners securing the upper steering column cover. Remove the Torx T20 screws (typically 2-3 screws). Carefully separate the upper cover from the steering column, being mindful of any wiring clips attached to the cover. Disconnect any electrical connectors for heated steering wheel if equipped.

   Locate and access dimmer switch
   With both column covers removed, identify the multi-function switch (dimmer switch) on the left side of the steering column. This is the lever assembly that controls turn signals, high beams, and wipers. Note the position and routing of the wiring harness connected to the switch.

   Disconnect dimmer switch electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector at the base of the dimmer switch assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull the connector away from the switch. If the connector is difficult to access, trace the wiring harness to find where it connects closer to the column base. Some models have a secondary connector that must also be disconnected.
   ⚠Do not force connectors. Ensure locking tabs are fully depressed before pulling to avoid breaking connector housings

   Remove dimmer switch mounting fasteners
   Using a Torx T25 driver, remove the two mounting screws that secure the dimmer switch to the steering column housing. These screws are typically located on the left side of the column near the switch base. Support the switch with your hand as you remove the second screw to prevent it from falling.

   Remove dimmer switch assembly
   Gently pull the dimmer switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have a small alignment pin or tab that fits into the column housing. Carefully work the switch free, ensuring no wiring is caught or pinched. Remove the switch from the vehicle and inspect the mounting area for any debris or damage.

   Inspect and prepare new switch
   Compare the old dimmer switch with the new replacement to ensure they match exactly, including connector types and lever configuration. Inspect the electrical connector on the wiring harness for corrosion or damage. If necessary, clean connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry completely.

   Install new dimmer switch
   Position the new dimmer switch assembly to the steering column, aligning any locating pins or tabs with the corresponding holes in the column housing. Ensure the switch sits flush against the mounting surface. Hand-start both Torx T25 mounting screws to hold the switch in place before tightening.

    Secure dimmer switch mounting screws
    Using a Torx T25 driver, tighten the two dimmer switch mounting screws in an alternating pattern to ensure even pressure. Tighten screws firmly but do not over-torque. The switch should be secure without any lateral movement when the lever is actuated.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Reconnect the electrical connector(s) to the dimmer switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Give the connector a gentle tug to verify it is fully seated and locked. Route the wiring harness back through any clips or guides to match the original installation path.

    Reinstall upper steering column cover
    Position the upper steering column cover back onto the column. Reconnect any heated steering wheel connectors if applicable. Align the cover with the lower mounting points and secure with the Torx T20 screws. Ensure all clips are fully engaged and the cover fits flush.

    Reinstall lower steering column cover
    Position the lower steering column cover and align it with the upper cover. Press the cover into place to engage any retaining clips. Install and tighten the Torx T20 screws at the bottom of the lower cover. Verify both cover halves fit together properly with no gaps.

    Reconnect battery
    Return to the engine bay and reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal. Using a 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten the battery terminal bolt to the specified torque. Ensure the connection is secure and the cable cannot move.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all steering column covers are properly aligned and secured with no rattles or gaps
2. Verify wiring harness routing does not interfere with steering column movement or adjustment
3. Check that the dimmer switch lever operates smoothly through its full range of motion
4. Confirm the steering wheel is still centered and has not been rotated during the procedure

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine) and verify the instrument cluster illuminates normally
• Test the turn signal function in both left and right positions, confirming proper indicator operation on the dash
• Test the high beam function by pulling the dimmer switch lever toward you, verifying the high beam indicator illuminates
• Test the windshield wiper function through all speed settings (intermittent, low, high) and confirm washer function
• Test the flash-to-pass function by briefly pulling the dimmer switch lever
• Start the engine and retest all dimmer switch functions while running
• Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
• If the vehicle is equipped with lane-keeping assist, test that the system functions properly after a short test drive
