This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the transmission shift cable on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with 5.0L V8 and RWD configuration.
Warnings

Parts
- Transmission shift cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Cable grommet (if damaged) × 1 — Firewall grommet
- Retaining clips × 2 — Cable retention clips
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Chock rear wheels securely
- Raise front of vehicle and support on jack stands
- Remove driver side front wheel for improved access to shift cable routing
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
Procedure
- 1Remove steering column trim panelsRemove the lower steering column cover by releasing the retaining clips at the bottom. Pull the cover down and away. Remove the upper steering column cover by releasing clips and lifting upward. Set panels aside in a clean area to avoid scratches.
- 2Disconnect shift cable from steering column shift leverLocate the shift cable connection at the base of the column shifter assembly. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the cable end bushing off the shift lever ball stud. Press the white locking tab on the cable housing and slide the cable forward out of the column bracket.
- 3Remove cable from firewallWorking inside the cabin, locate where the shift cable passes through the firewall near the steering column. Use needle nose pliers to compress the grommet retaining tabs and push the cable assembly through the firewall from inside to outside. Note the routing for reinstallation.
- 4Access transmission shift leverFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the transmission shift cable at the transmission shift lever on the driver side of the transmission. The lever is positioned on the left side of the transmission case. Clean any dirt or debris from the connection area.
- 5Disconnect cable from transmission leverUse a flathead screwdriver to pry the cable end bushing off the transmission shift lever ball stud. Press the locking tab on the cable bracket and slide the cable housing out of the transmission mounting bracket. Note the exact position and orientation.
- 6Remove cable bracket from transmissionRemove the two bolts securing the cable mounting bracket to the transmission case using a 10mm socket. Remove the bracket and cable assembly, carefully noting the cable routing along the frame and through any retention clips.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 7Remove old cable from vehicleTrace the cable path from transmission to firewall, releasing any routing clips or ties. Carefully pull the cable through the frame rails and body passages. Remove the cable completely from the vehicle and compare with new cable to verify correct replacement part.
- 8Install new cable through firewallWorking from the engine bay side, feed the new shift cable through the firewall opening. Ensure the grommet seats properly in the firewall hole with all retaining tabs fully engaged. Verify the grommet is not twisted or damaged.
- 9Route cable to transmissionRoute the new cable along the same path as the original, following the frame rail and through all factory routing clips. Ensure the cable has adequate slack and does not contact any hot surfaces, sharp edges, or moving components. Refer to photos taken during disassembly.
- 10Install cable bracket to transmissionPosition the cable mounting bracket on the transmission case. Install and hand-tighten the two mounting bolts, then torque to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure bracket is flush against transmission case.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 11Connect cable to transmission shift leverSlide the cable housing into the transmission mounting bracket until the locking tab clicks into place. Snap the cable end bushing onto the transmission shift lever ball stud by pressing firmly until it seats with an audible click. Verify connection is secure by attempting to pull the bushing off.
- 12Connect cable to column shift leverWorking inside the vehicle, slide the cable housing into the steering column bracket until the locking tab engages. Snap the cable end bushing onto the column shift lever ball stud until it clicks into place. Verify both connections are fully seated.
- 13Adjust shift cable if equippedIf the cable has an adjustment mechanism at the transmission end, loosen the adjustment nut. With the column shifter in Park, ensure the transmission lever is fully in Park detent position. Tighten the adjustment nut to specification while holding the cable housing stationary.Torque specAdjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reinstall steering column upper and lower trim panels, ensuring all clips engage properly
- Reinstall driver side front wheel and torque lug nuts to 150 lb-ft in star pattern
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Reconnect negative battery terminal
Verification
- With engine off, cycle the shifter through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) and verify smooth operation with distinct detents
- Verify the transmission position indicator in the instrument cluster matches the shifter position in all gears
- With foot on brake, start the engine in Park and verify it starts normally
- Attempt to start engine in Neutral to verify park/neutral safety switch function
- Verify engine will not start in Drive or Reverse positions
- With engine running and foot on brake, shift through all gears and confirm transmission engages each gear properly
- Road test vehicle to verify proper shift cable operation under driving conditions
- Verify the shifter returns to Park position and key can be removed from ignition
