This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the PCV valve on the 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, which regulates crankcase ventilation and helps maintain proper engine vacuum.

Preparation

Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
Allow engine to cool completely
Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

Remove engine cover
Grasp the engine cover firmly and pull upward to disengage the mounting grommets. The cover is held in place by push-in grommets and does not require tools for removal. Set the cover aside in a clean area.

Locate PCV valve
Identify the PCV valve on the passenger side valve cover, near the rear of the engine. It is a small cylindrical component with a hose connected to the intake manifold. Use a flashlight if needed to clearly see the valve and connections.

Disconnect PCV hose
Carefully disconnect the vacuum hose from the PCV valve by gently pulling and twisting the hose connection. If the connection is stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver to carefully pry between the hose and valve fitting. Note the routing of the hose for reinstallation.

Remove old PCV valve
Rotate the PCV valve counterclockwise to unthread it from the valve cover grommet. The valve should turn by hand. If resistance is encountered, do not force it. Once loosened, pull the valve straight out of the grommet. Inspect the grommet for cracks or deterioration.

Inspect and replace grommet
Remove the rubber grommet from the valve cover if it shows signs of hardening, cracking, or oil saturation. Press the new grommet firmly into the valve cover opening, ensuring it seats completely flush. The grommet should fit snugly without gaps.

Install new PCV valve
Insert the new PCV valve into the grommet and rotate clockwise to thread it into position. Tighten by hand until snug, then use a torque wrench to achieve the specified torque. Do not overtighten as this can damage the plastic valve body or grommet.

Reconnect PCV hose
Push the vacuum hose firmly onto the PCV valve fitting until it clicks or seats completely. Ensure the hose is routed properly and does not contact hot exhaust components or moving parts. Tug gently on the hose to verify secure connection.

Reinstall engine cover
Align the engine cover with the mounting grommets on the engine. Press down firmly on each mounting point until all grommets engage with an audible click. Verify the cover is seated evenly and secure.

Reassembly

Ensure all hose connections are secure and properly routed
Verify engine cover is fully seated on all mounting points
Wipe any fingerprints or debris from engine components

Verification

Start the engine and listen for vacuum leaks or hissing sounds near the PCV valve location
Allow engine to idle for 2-3 minutes and verify smooth idle with no rough running
Check for proper PCV system function by removing the oil fill cap while engine idles - there should be slight vacuum felt at the opening
Inspect PCV valve and hose connections for any oil leaks after test drive
