This procedure covers removal and replacement of the front door lock actuator on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150, including door panel removal and electrical connector service.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require clock reset.
ℹ️Work in temperatures above 50°F if possible to prevent brittle plastic clips from breaking during door panel removal.
⚠The door panel has multiple hidden clips that can break if excessive force is applied. Use proper trim removal tools.

Parts
- Front door lock actuator × 1 — Use OEM specification for side being replaced
- Door panel retaining clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes to allow airbag system to discharge
- Roll down the window of the door being serviced to mid-position for access
- Gather replacement clips in case any door panel clips break during removal
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel screwsOpen the door fully. Remove the two T30 Torx screws from the door pull handle cup. Remove the single T30 screw from the lower rear corner of the door panel near the door latch striker. If equipped with memory seat controls in the door, remove the screw behind the switch panel.
- 2Disconnect door control switchesUse a panel removal tool to carefully pry up the power window and lock switch assembly from the armrest. Disconnect the electrical connectors by pressing the release tabs and pulling straight up. Set the switch assembly aside in a safe location.
- 3Remove door panel from door frameStarting at the bottom rear corner, use a panel removal tool to release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Work your way around the panel, releasing approximately 10-12 clips. Once all clips are released, lift the panel upward to disengage it from the upper door frame lip, then pull away from the door.
- 4Disconnect door handle cableReach behind the removed door panel and disconnect the interior door handle release cable from the handle mechanism. Rotate the cable end 90 degrees and pull to release it from the plastic retainer clip on the handle assembly.
- 5Peel back water barrierCarefully peel back the plastic water barrier sheet from the door frame to access the lock actuator. Only peel back as much as necessary to reach the actuator mounting area. Be careful not to tear the barrier as it provides water protection.⚠The water barrier must remain intact and properly sealed to prevent water intrusion into the door panel and cabin.
- 6Disconnect lock actuator electrical connectorLocate the lock actuator mounted inside the door frame near the latch assembly. Press the release tab on the electrical connector and disconnect it from the actuator. If connector is difficult to reach, use a small flathead screwdriver to assist with the release tab.
- 7Disconnect actuator rodsDisconnect the lock rod and latch rod from the actuator by rotating the plastic rod clips and pulling the rods free. Note the orientation and position of each rod for reassembly. The lock rod typically connects to the top of the actuator, while the latch rod connects to the side.
- 8Remove lock actuator mounting fastenersRemove the three 7mm or 10mm bolts securing the lock actuator to the door frame. Support the actuator while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling into the door cavity.
- 9Remove old actuator and install new unitCarefully maneuver the old actuator out through the door frame access opening. Compare the new actuator to the old unit to verify correct replacement part. Position the new actuator in the mounting location, aligning the mounting holes with the door frame.
- 10Install actuator mounting fastenersInstall the three mounting bolts and tighten by hand initially. Once all bolts are started, tighten them in a cross pattern to secure the actuator firmly to the door frame. Ensure the actuator is properly seated before final tightening.
- 11Reconnect actuator rods and electrical connectorReconnect the lock rod and latch rod to the new actuator in the same positions as removed. Push the rods into the actuator clips until they click into place and pull gently to verify they are secure. Reconnect the electrical connector to the actuator until it clicks.
- 12Test actuator operationReconnect the negative battery terminal temporarily. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Test the door lock actuator using both the interior lock button and the key fob to verify proper operation in both lock and unlock directions. Disconnect the battery again before continuing.ℹ️Testing before full reassembly allows you to verify the repair without having to remove the door panel again if there is an issue.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 13Reseal water barrier and reinstall door panelPress the water barrier back into place, ensuring all edges are properly sealed to the door frame. Reconnect the door handle cable to the interior handle mechanism. Position the door panel over the door frame, engaging the upper lip first, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Reinstall all T30 screws removed earlier.
- 14Reconnect switches and final battery connectionReconnect the electrical connectors to the power window and lock switch assembly, then snap the switch assembly back into the armrest opening. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all door panel clips are fully seated and the panel is secure with no gaps
- Verify all screws are reinstalled in their original locations
- Check that the water barrier is properly sealed around all edges to prevent moisture intrusion
Verification
- Test door lock operation from all sources: interior lock button, key fob lock, key fob unlock, and exterior keypad if equipped
- Verify the door latch operates smoothly when using the interior handle
- Listen for any unusual noises from the actuator during lock/unlock cycles
- Check that all door panel switches function correctly
- Verify door panel is secure with no rattles when closing the door
- Reset clock and radio presets as needed after battery reconnection
