Parts
- Fuel cap × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and ensure engine is off
- Open fuel filler door located on driver's side rear quarter panel
Procedure
- 1Remove old fuel capTurn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it releases from the fuel filler neck. The cap may click several times during removal, which is normal. Continue turning until cap is free from the filler neck threads.
- 2Inspect fuel filler neckExamine the fuel filler neck threads for damage, corrosion, or debris. Wipe clean with a shop towel if necessary. Check the rubber seal inside the filler neck for cracks or deterioration.
- 3Install new fuel capAlign the new fuel cap with the filler neck and turn clockwise. Tighten until you hear at least 3 distinct clicks. This ensures the cap is properly seated and the evaporative emissions system will seal correctly.
- 4Close fuel filler doorPush the fuel filler door closed until it latches securely. Verify the door sits flush with the body panel.
Reassembly
- No reassembly required for this procedure
Verification
- Verify fuel cap is tightened until you hear at least 3 clicks
- Confirm fuel filler door closes and latches properly
- If check engine light was on due to loose fuel cap, it may take several drive cycles to clear automatically, or use a scan tool to clear codes after verifying cap is properly installed
