This procedure covers removal and replacement of the instrument cluster on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, including proper disconnection of electrical connectors and trim panels.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require clock reset. Note settings before beginning work.
⚠The instrument cluster contains sensitive electronics. Handle with care and avoid touching circuit board contacts.
ℹ️New instrument clusters may require dealer programming to match VIN and calibration data.

Parts
- Instrument cluster assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key fob from vehicle
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Adjust steering wheel to lowest and fully extended position for maximum access
- Ensure interior temperature is moderate (not cold) to prevent trim panel clip breakage
Procedure
- 1Disconnect batteryUsing a 10mm socket, loosen and remove the negative battery terminal bolt. Move the cable away from the battery post and secure it so it cannot make contact. Wait a minimum of 2 minutes before proceeding.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove steering column coversLocate the T20 Torx screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws). Remove the screws and carefully pull the lower cover away from the column. The upper cover has clips on the sides - squeeze gently and separate it from the lower section, then lift away from the steering column.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 3Remove instrument cluster trim bezelUsing a trim removal tool, carefully pry the instrument cluster bezel starting from the top corners. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing the retention clips. There are typically 8-10 clips around the bezel. Pull the bezel forward gently once all clips are released. If equipped with ambient light sensor, disconnect the electrical connector on the back of the bezel before fully removing.
- 4Remove cluster mounting boltsLocate the four T20 Torx bolts securing the instrument cluster to the instrument panel (one in each corner of the cluster opening). Remove all four bolts completely and set aside. Support the cluster with one hand as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from dropping.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 5Pull cluster forwardCarefully pull the instrument cluster straight forward approximately 3-4 inches. Do not pull at an angle or force it. If resistance is felt, verify all mounting bolts have been removed. Use a flashlight to view the rear of the cluster and identify the electrical connectors.
- 6Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the two main electrical connectors on the back of the cluster. Press the release tab on each connector while pulling straight back to disconnect. The larger connector typically has a sliding lock that must be moved before the release tab will function. On some models, there may be an additional smaller connector for the gear position indicator - disconnect this as well if present. Note connector positions for reassembly.
- 7Remove instrument clusterWith all electrical connections disconnected, carefully remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle. Keep the cluster face-up and place it on a clean, soft surface to prevent scratching the lens or damaging the circuit board. Avoid touching the connector pins or circuit board components.
- 8Install new instrument clusterRemove the new instrument cluster from its packaging, handling it by the edges. Position the cluster near the opening and reconnect all electrical connectors, ensuring each locks into place with an audible click. Verify the sliding lock on the main connector is fully engaged. Carefully guide the cluster into the instrument panel opening, ensuring no wires are pinched.
- 9Secure cluster mounting boltsInstall the four T20 Torx mounting bolts finger-tight first, ensuring the cluster is properly seated and aligned in the opening. Tighten the bolts in a cross pattern (top-left, bottom-right, top-right, bottom-left) to the specified torque using a torque wrench to prevent warping the mounting surface.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall trim bezelIf equipped with ambient light sensor, reconnect its electrical connector. Align the instrument cluster bezel with the mounting points and press firmly around the perimeter until all clips engage. Verify the bezel is flush with the surrounding dashboard surface and all gaps are even.
- 11Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover over the column and align with the lower cover. Snap the upper and lower sections together along the side seams. Install the lower cover T20 Torx screws and tighten to specification.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal cable to the battery post. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a 10mm socket and torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery terminal.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels and covers are properly seated with no gaps or misalignment
- Ensure steering column moves freely without interference from covers
- Check that all dashboard trim clips are fully engaged
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify all instrument cluster gauges perform their sweep test
- Check that all warning lights illuminate during bulb check, then extinguish as appropriate
- Verify odometer reading matches vehicle records (new clusters may show zero until programmed)
- Start engine and confirm all gauges are functioning correctly (speedometer, tachometer, fuel, temperature)
- Test all indicator lights including turn signals, high beams, and warning lights
- If cluster shows errors or incorrect mileage, dealer programming is required to match VIN and transfer odometer data
- Verify radio, clock, and other settings were reset as expected after battery disconnection
