Replace engine oil and oil filter on the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine, restoring lubrication system to factory specifications.

Warnings

Engine oil and components can be extremely hot. Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before beginning work.
Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
ℹ️The 3.5L EcoBoost uses a cartridge-type oil filter located on the driver side of the engine block, accessible from below.

Parts

  • Engine oil filter × 1 — Motorcraft FL-500-S or equivalent
  • Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • Motorcraft 0W-20 Full Synthetic — 6 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Allow engine to reach operating temperature, then shut off and wait 30 minutes to cool
  4. Raise front of vehicle using floor jack at designated front jacking point
  5. Support vehicle on jack stands placed at frame rail jacking points
  6. Lower jack slightly to transfer weight to jack stands, leaving jack in place as backup

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access oil drain plug
Position drain pan under the oil drain plug located on the driver side of the oil pan, toward the rear. Ensure drain pan is positioned to catch oil flow which will initially stream outward.
  2. 2
    Remove oil drain plug
Using a 15mm socket, loosen the oil drain plug slowly. Once loose, quickly remove the plug by hand while pulling away to avoid oil contact. Allow oil to drain completely, approximately 5-10 minutes.
Oil may still be warm. Drain plug will drop when fully unthreaded.
  3. 3
    Replace drain plug crush washer
Remove and discard the old aluminum crush washer from the drain plug. Install a new crush washer onto the drain plug, ensuring it seats properly in the plug recess.
  4. 4
    Reinstall oil drain plug
Thread the drain plug by hand into the oil pan to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten to specification using a torque wrench.

  5. 5
    Locate oil filter housing
Position drain pan under the oil filter housing, located on the driver side of the engine block, below the exhaust manifold. The cartridge-type filter housing has a 74mm 14-flute plastic cap.
  6. 6
    Remove oil filter housing cap
Using the 74mm 14-flute oil filter wrench, loosen the filter housing cap by turning counterclockwise. Oil will drain from the housing as the cap is removed. Remove the cap completely and set aside on a clean surface.
ℹ️The filter cartridge will remain in the housing or may come out with the cap.
  7. 7
    Remove old filter cartridge
Pull the old filter cartridge from the housing. Inspect the housing cap and ensure the old O-ring came out with the filter assembly. Wipe the housing sealing surface clean with a shop rag.
  8. 8
    Install new filter cartridge
Remove the new filter from packaging. Lightly lubricate the new O-ring on the filter cap with clean engine oil. Insert the new filter cartridge into the housing, ensuring proper orientation with the spring side down.
  9. 9
    Install oil filter housing cap
Thread the filter housing cap by hand until it seats against the housing. Tighten to specification using the torque wrench and filter wrench.

  10. 10
    Add new engine oil
Lower vehicle to the ground. Remove the oil filler cap on the driver side valve cover. Using a funnel, add 5.5 quarts of Motorcraft 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil. Reinstall oil filler cap hand tight.
  11. 11
Check oil level and run engine
Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle. Check oil level using dipstick; level should be between MIN and MAX marks. Start engine and let idle for 1 minute, monitoring for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing. Shut off engine and wait 2 minutes.
  12. 12
    Final oil level check
Recheck oil level with dipstick and add oil in 0.25 quart increments if necessary to reach the MAX mark. Total capacity is 6.0 quarts with filter change. Do not overfill.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure oil filler cap is installed hand tight to prevent vacuum leaks
  2. Verify no tools or rags were left in engine compartment
  3. Properly dispose of used oil and filter at an approved recycling facility

Verification

  • Oil level reads at or near MAX mark on dipstick when checked on level ground after engine has been off for 2+ minutes
  • No oil leaks visible at drain plug or filter housing after engine has run
  • Oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds of starting engine
  • Engine idles smoothly with no unusual noises indicating proper lubrication
