Parts
- Seat heater element pad (driver or passenger side) × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket
- Seat upholstery hog rings × 20 — Stainless steel 3/8 inch rings
- Seat trim clips (if damaged) × 5 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and ensure ignition is off
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Move seat to full forward position using manual release if necessary
- Remove any floor mats or debris from around seat base
- Prepare clean work area to place seat components during disassembly
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery and remove seatDisconnect the negative battery terminal using 8mm wrench. Wait 2 minutes. Move seat to mid-position. Locate four seat mounting bolts (two front, two rear) accessible from beneath seat rails. Remove front mounting bolts first, then rear mounting bolts using 13mm socket. Tilt seat back to access wiring harnesses beneath seat. Disconnect all electrical connectors including seat heater, airbag (yellow connector), power seat motor, and any other connections. Carefully remove seat from vehicle.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 2Remove seat back trim and headrestRemove headrest by pressing release buttons on headrest posts and pulling upward. Locate plastic trim covers on seat back sides. Use trim removal tool to carefully pry off side shields starting from bottom. Remove any Torx screws (typically T25) securing upper seat back cover. Disconnect any trim clips by pulling firmly outward. Set all trim pieces aside in organized manner.
- 3Separate seat back from seat baseLocate hinge bolts connecting seat back to seat base on both sides (typically two 13mm bolts per side). Support seat back with one hand while removing bolts. Carefully separate seat back from base, routing any wiring through openings. Disconnect any remaining electrical connections between back and base. Place seat back on protected surface to avoid damage.
- 4Remove seat cushion upholsteryTurn seat base upside down on protected work surface. Locate hog rings securing seat cover to cushion frame around perimeter (typically 15-25 rings). Use hog ring pliers to compress and remove each ring, working methodically around cushion. Note wire routing for heater element and any J-clips holding wires. Once all hog rings removed, carefully peel upholstery and foam padding back to expose heater element underneath. Work slowly to avoid tearing material.
- 5Disconnect and remove failed heater elementLocate heater element electrical connector, typically secured to seat frame with a clip. Disconnect connector by depressing locking tab. If equipped, test old element with multimeter (should read 1-3 ohms across terminals when functional). Note exact positioning and routing of heater element wires through foam. Carefully peel adhesive-backed heater element from foam cushion, starting at one corner and working slowly to avoid tearing foam. Remove any remaining adhesive residue from foam surface.
- 6Install new heater elementPosition new heater element on foam cushion in exact location as original, ensuring proper orientation (connector side matches original position). Verify element is centered and smooth without wrinkles. Peel backing from adhesive and carefully press element onto foam, working from center outward to eliminate air bubbles. Ensure edges are fully adhered. Route wiring through foam channels as noted during removal, securing with original clips if reusable.
- 7Reconnect heater element connectorRoute heater element wire to connector location on seat frame. Connect electrical connector, ensuring positive lock engagement (you should hear/feel a click). Secure connector to frame bracket with retaining clip. Verify wiring is not pinched between seat cushion and frame, and has adequate slack for seat movement.
- 8Reinstall seat upholsteryPosition foam padding and upholstery cover back over seat cushion, aligning all edges and seams to original positions. Starting at front center, install new hog rings through upholstery material and cushion frame wire using hog ring pliers. Work around perimeter, maintaining even tension to avoid wrinkles. Install hog rings approximately every 2-3 inches. Ensure upholstery seams align properly and material is taut but not overstretched. Double-check that heater wiring is not pinched.
- 9Reassemble seat back to basePosition seat back to seat base, aligning hinge mounting points. Route any wiring harnesses through proper channels between back and base. Reconnect electrical connectors between seat sections if applicable. Install hinge bolts finger-tight on both sides, then torque to specification alternating between sides for even clamping. Verify seat back reclines and locks properly through full range of motion.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall trim panels and headrestReinstall seat back trim covers, aligning clips with mounting holes. Press firmly to engage all clips until seated flush. Install any Torx screws removed earlier. Reinstall side shields, ensuring all tabs are properly engaged. Install headrest by inserting posts into guides until release buttons engage with audible click. Tug headrest to verify secure installation.
- 11Reinstall seat in vehiclePosition seat in vehicle cabin, routing all wiring harnesses through seat base. Connect all electrical connectors including seat heater, airbag (yellow connector - ensure positive lock), power seat motors, and occupancy sensor. Align seat mounting holes with floor brackets. Install mounting bolts finger-tight (front bolts first, then rear). Torque all four mounting bolts to specification in cross pattern.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery and test systemReconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start). Verify no airbag warning lights remain illuminated after system self-check (approximately 6 seconds). Start vehicle and activate seat heater using climate controls. Allow 2-3 minutes for heater element to warm. Verify even heating across seat cushion surface by carefully feeling with hand. Test all seat functions including power adjustment, recline, and lumbar support if equipped.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated with positive locks engaged before reinstalling seat
- Ensure seat mounting bolts are torqued to proper specification - improper torque can affect crash safety
- Test seat heater function for at least 5 minutes to confirm even heating and proper operation
- Verify no airbag warning lights remain on after battery reconnection
Verification
- Turn ignition on and verify airbag warning light completes normal self-check and extinguishes
- Activate seat heater and confirm even warmth across entire cushion within 3-5 minutes
- Check that seat operates normally through full range of motion without binding or unusual noises
- Verify all trim panels are secure with no rattles or loose clips
- Confirm seat mounting bolts are properly torqued and seat does not shift or move on floor mounts
