Parts
- Door speaker (6x9 or 6x8 depending on door location) × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
- Door panel retainer clips (if damaged during removal) × 5 — Ford part number varies by year
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Lower the window completely to prevent glass damage during door panel removal
- Identify which door speaker requires replacement (front or rear, driver or passenger)
- Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning
Procedure
- 1Remove door handle trim bezelLocate the small trim bezel around the interior door handle. Use a plastic trim tool to carefully pry the bezel away from the door panel, starting at the rear edge. Pull outward to release the retaining clips and remove the bezel completely.
- 2Remove door panel fastenersUsing a Torx T20 driver, remove the screw located in the door handle pocket. Using a Torx T30 driver, remove the two screws at the bottom of the door panel (near the door edge). On models with power windows, remove the screw behind the window switch panel. Total fasteners typically include 3-4 Torx screws depending on trim level.
- 3Disconnect window and lock switch panelUse a plastic trim tool to carefully pry up the window/lock switch panel from the armrest. Lift the panel upward and disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling the connector straight out. Set the switch panel aside in a safe location.
- 4Release door panel retaining clipsStarting at the bottom rear corner of the door panel, use a door panel removal tool to carefully pry the panel away from the door frame. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing each retaining clip. There are typically 8-10 clips around the door panel edge. Pull gently but firmly to avoid breaking clips.⚠Apply even pressure when releasing clips to prevent cracking the door panel or breaking retainer clips.
- 5Disconnect door latch cable and remove panelOnce all clips are released, lift the door panel upward to clear the window sill ledge. Reach behind the panel and disconnect the door latch cable by rotating the cable end 90 degrees and unhooking it from the latch mechanism. Remove the door panel and set it on a protected surface.
- 6Remove vapor barrier access areaLocate the speaker position behind the door panel. Carefully peel back or cut a small access opening in the vapor barrier (plastic moisture shield) to expose the speaker mounting area. Keep the opening as small as possible to maintain moisture protection.ℹ️On some models, the vapor barrier may have a pre-cut access panel sealed with adhesive. Carefully separate this section rather than cutting a new opening.
- 7Disconnect speaker electrical connectorLocate the speaker wiring harness connector. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight out to disconnect it from the speaker. Note the connector orientation for reinstallation.
- 8Remove speaker mounting fastenersUsing a Torx T20 driver, remove the 3 or 4 screws securing the speaker to the door frame. Support the speaker with one hand while removing the final screw to prevent it from falling into the door cavity.
- 9Remove speaker from doorCarefully extract the speaker from the door frame, guiding the connector through the opening. Inspect the mounting surface for debris or corrosion and clean if necessary.
- 10Install new speakerPosition the new speaker in the door frame mounting location, ensuring the screw holes align properly and the speaker cone faces into the cabin. Thread in all mounting screws by hand first, then tighten evenly in a cross pattern using a Torx T20 driver. Do not overtighten as the speaker housing is plastic.
- 11Reconnect speaker electrical connectorConnect the wiring harness to the new speaker, ensuring the connector locks into place with an audible click. Gently tug on the connection to verify it is secure.
- 12Reseal vapor barrier and reinstall door panelPress the vapor barrier back into position, ensuring a good seal around the access area. If the barrier was cut, use weatherproof tape to reseal the opening. Reconnect the door latch cable to the mechanism. Align the door panel with the window sill ledge and lower it into position. Press firmly around all clip locations to seat the retainers. Reinstall all Torx screws removed earlier, reconnect the window/lock switch panel, and reinstall the door handle bezel.
Reassembly
- Ensure all door panel clips are fully seated before testing
- Verify the door handle operates smoothly and the latch cable is properly connected
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification
- Test all window and lock functions to confirm proper switch reconnection
Verification
- Turn ignition to accessory mode and test the new speaker across all audio sources (radio, Bluetooth, etc.)
- Test speaker at various volume levels to ensure no rattling or distortion
- Verify no warning lights or fault codes are present on the instrument cluster
- Check that the door panel is secure with no loose areas or unusual gaps
- Confirm the door window operates smoothly without interference from the door panel
