Parts

  • Tail light assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and ensure all lights are off
  3. Open tailgate for easier access to tail light assembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access tail light assembly
From inside the truck bed, locate the tail light assembly access area. On 2021-2024 F-150 models, the tail light is accessible from inside the bed near the rear corner. You may need to fold back or remove any bed liner material that covers the access point.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Locate the tail light electrical connector behind the assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight out to disconnect. Do not twist or pull on the wiring harness itself.
  3. 3
    Remove tail light mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the two tail light mounting bolts accessible from inside the bed. These bolts secure the tail light assembly to the body panel. Keep bolts in a safe location for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Tail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove tail light assembly
From the outside of the vehicle, carefully pull the tail light assembly straight back away from the vehicle body. The assembly may have alignment pins that need to be cleared. Use gentle even pressure to avoid breaking mounting tabs.
  5. 5
    Inspect mounting surface
Check the body panel mounting surface for damage, corrosion, or debris. Clean the mounting area with a shop towel if necessary. Inspect the seal or gasket area on the body to ensure proper weatherproofing upon reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Install new tail light assembly
Position the new tail light assembly aligned with the mounting holes and body panel. Ensure any alignment pins or guides are properly seated. Press the assembly firmly into position until it sits flush against the body panel.
  7. 7
    Install mounting bolts
From inside the bed, start both tail light mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Using a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten both bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating.
    Torque spec
    Tail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Connect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector and push it firmly into the tail light assembly socket until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure tail light assembly is seated flush with no gaps around the perimeter
  2. Verify electrical connector is fully locked and not hanging loose
  3. Reposition any bed liner material that was moved during access

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and activate hazard lights to verify turn signals function
  • Press brake pedal to verify brake lights illuminate on both sides
  • Turn on headlights to verify running lights and tail lights illuminate
  • Inspect around tail light assembly exterior for proper sealing and alignment with body panel
  • Verify no moisture intrusion or gaps in the assembly seal
