This procedure replaces the transmission mount on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine, which secures the transmission to the vehicle frame and dampens vibration.

Warnings

⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠️The transmission weighs several hundred pounds. Ensure proper support is in place before removing mount bolts to prevent crushing injury.
Perform this work on a level surface with the parking brake engaged and transmission in Park.
Allow the exhaust system to cool completely before beginning work as components may be near the transmission mount.

Parts

  • Transmission mount × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Chock the front wheels to prevent vehicle movement
  3. Raise the rear of the vehicle using a floor jack at the rear differential
  4. Support the vehicle with jack stands placed under the frame rails behind the transmission crossmember
  5. Lower vehicle onto jack stands and verify stability before working underneath
  6. Inspect the transmission mount and surrounding area for damage or fluid leaks

Procedure

  1. 1
    Support the transmission
Position a transmission jack or adjustable floor jack with a wide wood block directly under the transmission oil pan. Raise the jack until it just makes contact with the pan, providing slight upward pressure but not lifting the transmission. The transmission weight should still be resting on the mount at this point.
Use a wood block or rubber pad between the jack and transmission pan to prevent damage to the pan. Do not jack directly on the drain plug.
  2. 2
    Locate the transmission mount
Identify the transmission mount assembly located on the transmission tailhousing. The mount attaches to the transmission with bolts from above and sits in a crossmember bracket. Note the orientation of the mount before removal for proper reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Remove transmission mount-to-crossmember fasteners
Working from underneath the vehicle, locate the nuts or bolts securing the transmission mount to the crossmember bracket. Remove these fasteners using the appropriate socket. There are typically two fasteners securing the mount to the crossmember. Apply penetrating oil if fasteners are corroded.

  4. 4
    Raise transmission slightly
Using the transmission jack, carefully raise the transmission approximately 1-2 inches to relieve weight from the mount. Raise slowly and watch for any interference with exhaust, driveshaft, or wiring. This will create clearance to remove the mount from the crossmember.
Do not raise the transmission more than 2 inches to avoid stressing the driveshaft U-joints, exhaust connections, or transmission cooler lines.
  5. 5
    Remove transmission mount-to-transmission bolts
Locate the bolts securing the transmission mount to the transmission tailhousing or extension housing. These are typically accessed from the sides or top of the mount. Remove all mounting bolts using the appropriate socket and extension. Keep track of any washers or spacers.

  6. 6
    Remove the transmission mount
With all fasteners removed, pull the transmission mount away from the transmission and out of the crossmember bracket. The mount may be stuck due to corrosion or compression over time. Gently pry or tap with a rubber mallet if necessary to break it free.
  7. 7
    Clean mounting surfaces
Using a wire brush, clean the mounting surface on the transmission tailhousing and the crossmember bracket. Remove any rust, dirt, or old rubber residue. Inspect the crossmember for cracks or damage. Clean all bolt threads and apply a light coat of anti-seize compound.
  8. 8
    Install new transmission mount
Position the new transmission mount onto the transmission tailhousing in the same orientation as the original. Start all mount-to-transmission bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Do not fully tighten yet.
  9. 9
    Lower transmission into mount
Using the transmission jack, carefully lower the transmission so the mount seats properly into the crossmember bracket. Align the mount holes with the crossmember bracket holes. The transmission should sit level when properly positioned.
  10. 10
    Install mount-to-crossmember fasteners
Install the fasteners that secure the transmission mount to the crossmember bracket. Start them by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all fasteners are started, tighten them to the specified torque using a torque wrench.

  11. 11
    Torque mount-to-transmission bolts
With the mount now secured to the crossmember and the transmission weight properly seated, torque the bolts securing the mount to the transmission tailhousing to specification. Use a torque wrench and follow a cross-pattern if multiple bolts are present.

  12. 12
Remove transmission jack and lower vehicle
Carefully lower and remove the transmission jack from under the transmission. Verify all fasteners are tight and no tools are left under the vehicle. Raise the vehicle slightly using the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all fasteners are torqued to specification and no tools or parts are left under the vehicle
  2. Verify the transmission mount is properly seated in the crossmember bracket with no gaps
  3. Check that all wiring, exhaust, and driveshaft components are clear of interference

Verification

  • Start the engine and shift through all transmission gears while stationary to verify smooth operation
  • With the engine running, check for excessive vibration in the cabin that might indicate improper mount installation
  • Test drive the vehicle and accelerate moderately to verify the transmission mount is controlling driveline movement properly
  • Listen for clunking noises during acceleration or deceleration that could indicate loose mount fasteners
  • After test drive, re-inspect all mount fasteners from underneath to ensure none have loosened
