Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position and mark steering wheel orientation
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
4. Remove lower steering column trim panels using trim removal tools
5. Document or photograph steering column electrical connector routing for reassembly reference

Procedure

   Remove Lower Steering Column Covers
   Remove the lower steering column cover screws using T20 Torx bit. Carefully separate the upper and lower column covers, releasing any retaining clips. Set covers aside in a clean area.

   Disconnect Electrical Connectors
   Locate the steering angle sensor electrical connector on the steering column assembly. Press the connector lock tab and carefully disconnect the wiring harness. If equipped, disconnect any additional column-mounted electrical connectors that may interfere with sensor access.
   ⚠Avoid pulling on wires; always disconnect at the connector body to prevent terminal damage

   Remove Steering Column Coupling Bolt
   Locate the intermediate shaft coupling bolt at the base of the steering column where it connects to the steering gear input shaft. Mark the relationship between the shaft and coupling for reinstallation alignment. Using a 10mm socket, remove the coupling bolt while supporting the intermediate shaft.
   ⚠️Do not rotate the steering wheel once coupling is disconnected to prevent clockspring damage
   Torque spec

   Coupling Bolt39 Nm (29 lb-ft)

   Remove Steering Column Mounting Bolts
   Support the steering column assembly with one hand. Remove the steering column mounting bolts using appropriate socket. There are typically two mounting bolts securing the column to the support bracket. Carefully lower the column enough to access the steering angle sensor.

   Remove Old Steering Angle Sensor
   Identify the steering angle sensor mounted to the steering column shaft. Remove the sensor mounting fasteners (typically 2-3 screws or bolts). Carefully slide the sensor off the steering shaft, noting its orientation and position on the shaft splines. Inspect the shaft for any debris or damage.

   Install New Steering Angle Sensor
   Clean the steering shaft splines with a lint-free cloth. Position the new steering angle sensor onto the steering shaft, aligning it with the splines in the same orientation as the original sensor. Ensure the sensor is fully seated against the mounting surface before securing fasteners.
   ⚠Sensor must be aligned correctly on shaft splines or calibration will fail and steering feedback will be incorrect

   Secure Sensor and Reinstall Column
   Tighten the steering angle sensor mounting fasteners per manufacturer specifications. Raise the steering column back into position, aligning the mounting holes. Install and torque the column mounting bolts. Reconnect the electrical connector to the steering angle sensor, ensuring it clicks into place.

   Reconnect Intermediate Shaft Coupling
   Align the intermediate shaft coupling with the marks made during disassembly, ensuring proper shaft alignment. Install the coupling bolt and torque to specification. Verify the coupling is properly seated and the steering shaft can move freely without binding.

   Reinstall Steering Column Covers
   Route all electrical connectors back to their original positions. Position the upper and lower steering column covers, ensuring all retaining clips engage properly. Install and torque the cover screws to specification.

    Perform System Calibration
    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Using an OBD-II scan tool with Ford-specific capabilities, access the steering angle sensor calibration function. Follow the scan tool prompts to perform sensor zero-point calibration with wheels straight ahead. Complete the calibration procedure and verify no fault codes are present.

Reassembly

1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Confirm steering column covers are securely fastened with no gaps or loose clips
3. Test steering wheel for smooth operation through full lock-to-lock range without binding
4. Clear any stored diagnostic trouble codes after successful calibration

Verification

• Start the engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated on the instrument cluster (stability control, ABS, steering warnings should be off)
• Perform a slow-speed test drive and verify stability control system responds appropriately to steering inputs
• Use scan tool to verify steering angle sensor data is reading correctly and matches actual steering wheel position
• Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock at idle and confirm smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises
• Verify stability control and traction control systems activate properly during controlled testing
