The S550-generation 2018 Mustang is a solid platform, but the 2.3L EcoBoost has well-documented turbo and engine internals failures, while the 5.2L GT350 Voodoo is infamous for oil consumption and catastrophic engine damage. The 5.0L Coyote is the most reliable of the bunch.
MT82 Manual Transmission Failures (All Engines)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 40,000-80,000 mi
Symptoms: Gear grind entering 2nd or 3rd, especially when cold, Lockout from certain gears or refusing to shift smoothly, Notchy, balky shifter feel that worsens over time, Transmission fluid contamination with metal shavings
Fix: MT82 has weak synchronizers and shift fork design. Most shops rebuild or replace with updated Ford service parts or aftermarket. Expect 8-12 hours labor for removal, rebuild, reinstall. Some owners upgrade to MT82-D4 or Tremec aftermarket.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,500
2.3L EcoBoost Turbocharger Failure and Engine Damage
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 30,000-70,000 mi
Symptoms: Loss of boost pressure, limp mode, reduced power, Loud whining or grinding noise from turbo during acceleration, Blue smoke from exhaust, oil consumption spikes, Check engine light with turbo underboost or overboost codes, Catastrophic engine damage if turbo shrapnel enters cylinders
Fix: Turbo seals fail, oil intrusion damages compressor wheel. If caught early, turbo replacement is 6-8 hours. If shrapnel enters engine, you're looking at short block or full rebuild (20-30 hours). Ford issued a recall for some VINs but many fall outside coverage.
Estimated cost: $3,000-5,000 turbo only; $8,000-12,000 if engine internals damaged
5.2L Voodoo (GT350) Excessive Oil Consumption and Bearing Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 20,000-60,000 mi
Symptoms: Burning 1+ quart of oil every 500-1,000 miles, Low oil pressure warning, lifter tick at idle, Rod knock or main bearing noise, especially on cold start, Metal shavings in oil filter, fuel dilution of oil, Catastrophic engine failure if ignored
Fix: Flat-plane crank Voodoo has porous engine block castings and weak bearing tolerances. Ford extended warranty to 7yr/84k but many fail outside coverage. Requires complete engine rebuild or Ford replacement short block. 25-35 hours labor for removal, rebuild, reinstall.
Estimated cost: $15,000-25,000
10-Speed Automatic Transmission Harsh Shifts and Shudder
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 10,000-50,000 mi
Symptoms: Hard downshifts when coasting to a stop, clunk into gear, Shudder or vibration during light throttle acceleration 30-50 mph, Delayed or hunting shifts, transmission searching for correct gear, Check engine light with transmission control codes
Fix: 10R80 transmission has adaptive learning issues and torque converter shudder. Ford issued TSBs for software updates (1-2 hours) and fluid flush with Mercon ULV. Persistent cases need valve body replacement or torque converter (8-10 hours). Most resolve with software reflash and fluid service.
Estimated cost: $200-500 for software/fluid; $2,500-3,500 for valve body; $3,000-4,000 torque converter
Rear Differential Bushing Failure and Clunking
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk or thud from rear when launching or lifting throttle, Excessive drivetrain lash, feels like slack in driveline, Vibration under acceleration, especially with performance pack, Visible torn or collapsed rubber in differential mount bushings
Fix: Independent rear suspension uses rubber bushings that tear under high torque. Replace rear subframe bushings and differential mount. 4-6 hours labor with alignment after. Upgraded polyurethane bushings recommended for V8 models.
Estimated cost: $800-1,500
Fuel Pump Control Module and Low Pressure Pump Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Intermittent no-start, long crank before engine fires, Stalling when hot, restarts after cooling down, Loss of power under load, stumbling acceleration, Check engine light with fuel pressure sensor or pump codes
Fix: Fuel pump control module fails, causing low pressure pump to stop. Module is under rear seat (1 hour). If pump itself fails, tank must drop (3-4 hours). EcoBoost models more prone due to high pressure demands.
Estimated cost: $400-700 module only; $1,200-1,800 with pump replacement
Backup Camera Failure and Black Screen
Occasional · low severity
Symptoms: Backup camera shows black screen or 'camera unavailable' message, Intermittent camera function, works sometimes but not others, Lines or static on camera display, Water intrusion visible in camera lens housing
Fix: Camera seal fails, allowing moisture into housing. Ford issued recall for some VINs but many still fail outside coverage. Replace camera and taillight panel seal. 1-2 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $300-600
Owner tips
If buying a 5.2L GT350, budget for an engine rebuild or walk away—it's not 'if' but 'when' on oil consumption.
MT82 manual: change fluid every 30k with Motorcraft full synthetic, avoid aggressive 1-2 shifts when cold.
EcoBoost: monitor oil level religiously, any turbo whistle or oil smell from exhaust means stop driving immediately.
10-speed auto: keep software updated via dealer TSB flashes, use only Mercon ULV fluid.
All V8s: premium fuel only, ignore this and you'll fight timing pull and carbon buildup.
Buy the 5.0L Coyote with confidence, tolerate the 2.3L EcoBoost with caution, avoid the 5.2L Voodoo unless you have a spare $20k for the inevitable engine replacement—MT82 is a known weak point regardless of engine choice.

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2018 Ford Mustang vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and a 12.4" digital instrument cluster. If the ignition is turned off when the transmission is not in PARK, the instrument cluster may not illuminate the PRNDL gear position display and the operator may not receive the "Key in Ignition" chime when the driver's door is opened. As such, these vehicles fails to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence/Starter Interlock/Transmission Braking Effect," and number 114, "Theft Protection."
Consequence: Without a visual or audible warning to the driver that the vehicle is in PARK, the vehicle may roll away after it has been exited if the parking brake has not been applied, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the instrument cluster software, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 5, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17C21.
