This procedure replaces the driver airbag module in the steering wheel of a 2018-2024 Honda Accord 1.5L Turbo, requiring battery disconnection and proper wait time before work.
Warnings
⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEM: Airbag deployment during work can cause severe injury or death. Follow ALL safety procedures exactly.
⚠️Battery MUST be disconnected and you MUST wait minimum 3 minutes (Honda specifies 3 minutes, not 2) before touching any airbag components to allow capacitors to discharge.
⚠️Never use impact tools on airbag fasteners. Always use hand tools with proper torque specifications.
⚠️Only use NEW OEM Honda airbag modules. Never reuse deployed airbags or use aftermarket airbags.
⚠️Place removed airbag face-UP on a clean, flat surface away from work area. Never place airbag face-down.
⚠Wheels must be straight ahead and steering wheel locked before removal to prevent damage to clock spring.
⚠After installation, clear all airbag codes with proper Honda scan tool and verify system operation.
⚠If you are uncomfortable with any aspect of this procedure, seek professional service. Errors can result in airbag non-deployment in a crash.

Parts
- Driver airbag module × 1 — Use OEM Honda airbag only - safety critical component

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground with wheels pointed straight ahead
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key or fob from vehicle
- Ensure no one else is in or near the vehicle during this procedure
- Verify you have a NEW OEM Honda driver airbag module - never reuse or use aftermarket
- Open hood and locate battery in engine compartment (driver side)
- Disconnect negative battery terminal using 10mm socket
- Wait MINIMUM 3 MINUTES after battery disconnection to allow SRS capacitors to fully discharge - set a timer
- Mark the steering wheel position relative to the steering column with tape or paint for proper reassembly alignment
Procedure
- 1Access airbag module fastenersAfter confirming 3+ minutes have elapsed since battery disconnect, locate the two Torx access holes on the sides of the steering wheel (at approximately 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions). These holes provide access to the airbag mounting bolts behind the steering wheel spokes.
- 2Remove airbag module mounting boltsInsert Torx T30 bit into each access hole and turn counterclockwise to remove both airbag module mounting bolts. These are spring-loaded and may push out as you loosen them - keep control of the bolts so they don't fall. Remove both bolts completely and set aside.⚠️Use only hand tools. Never use power tools or impact drivers on airbag fasteners.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 3Carefully pull airbag module from wheelGently pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel center. It will move forward about 2-3 inches. Do not pull the wiring harness - allow enough slack to access the connectors on the back of the module.⚠Support the weight of the airbag module. Do not let it hang by the wiring.
- 4Disconnect airbag electrical connectorsLocate the yellow SRS connector on the back of the airbag module. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out from the module. There may be a secondary connector for horn/controls - disconnect this as well by pressing the release tab. Remove the airbag module from the vehicle.⚠️Place the removed airbag face-UP on a clean, flat surface away from the work area. NEVER place face-down.
- 5Inspect clock spring and connectorsWith the airbag removed, visually inspect the clock spring (yellow spiral cable assembly behind steering wheel) for any damage, cracks, or wear. Inspect all connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or bent pins. Check that the clock spring alignment marks are visible and aligned (if clock spring has rotated, it must be re-centered before proceeding).⚠If clock spring shows any damage or misalignment, it must be replaced or re-centered before installing new airbag.
- 6Connect new airbag module connectorsRemove new airbag module from packaging. Connect the yellow SRS connector to the new airbag module until you hear/feel a positive click. Connect the secondary horn/control connector if equipped. Gently tug on both connectors to verify they are fully seated and locked.⚠️Ensure connectors are fully locked. Partial connection can cause deployment failure or inadvertent deployment.
- 7Position airbag module on steering wheelCarefully guide the wiring and connectors back into the steering wheel center cavity. Align the airbag module with the mounting holes in the steering wheel, ensuring the TOP marking on the airbag faces upward. Press the module flush against the steering wheel surface.
- 8Install and torque airbag mounting boltsInsert both Torx mounting bolts through the access holes and thread them into the airbag module by hand. Using a torque wrench with Torx T30 bit, tighten each bolt to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft) in an alternating pattern. Verify both bolts are properly torqued and the airbag module is secure with no gaps around the perimeter.⚠️Critical torque specification. Over-torquing can damage airbag module; under-torquing can cause improper deployment or module detachment.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect battery and clear codesReconnect the negative battery terminal using 10mm socket. Tighten the terminal bolt securely. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). The SRS light will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds then turn off if system is functioning properly.⚠Do not have any body parts near the airbag module when reconnecting battery, even though risk is minimal.
Reassembly
- Verify steering wheel position matches the alignment marks made during disassembly
- Confirm airbag module is flush-mounted with no gaps and all bolts are torqued to specification
- Ensure battery is securely reconnected and terminal is tight
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
- Observe the SRS indicator light on the instrument cluster - it should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds then turn OFF
- If SRS light stays on, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, there is a system fault that must be diagnosed with a Honda scan tool
- Use a Honda HDS scan tool or equivalent professional tool to verify no airbag system DTCs are present
- Clear any stored codes and perform a final system check with the scan tool
- Start the engine and verify SRS light remains off during normal operation
- Test horn operation to confirm secondary controls are functioning
- If SRS light remains illuminated or any faults are present, DO NOT drive the vehicle - seek professional diagnosis immediately
