Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands for easier access from below
- Remove the passenger-side plastic undercover for better belt access (5 plastic clips and 3 bolts)
- Locate the belt routing diagram on the fan shroud or hood underside and take a photo for reference
Procedure
- 1Inspect the existing belt conditionBefore removal, inspect the belt for wear patterns, cracks, glazing, or fraying. Check belt tension and routing. Note any unusual wear patterns that might indicate pulley misalignment or other issues that should be addressed.
- 2Locate the belt tensionerThe automatic spring-loaded belt tensioner is located on the lower left side of the engine block when viewed from the front. It has a 14mm hex center bolt used to rotate the tensioner arm. Access is easiest from below the vehicle.
- 3Release belt tensionUsing a 14mm socket on a breaker bar or serpentine belt tool, insert into the tensioner center bolt. Rotate the tensioner clockwise (toward the passenger side) to release tension on the belt. The tensioner will move approximately 90 degrees. Hold the tensioner in this position.⚠Maintain firm control of the breaker bar. If it slips, the tensioner will snap back quickly and can cause injury.
- 4Remove the old beltWhile holding the tensioner in the released position, slip the belt off the tensioner pulley first, then off the alternator pulley. Slowly and carefully release the tensioner back to its resting position. Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys (crankshaft, water pump, A/C compressor).
- 5Inspect pulleys and tensionerWith the belt removed, manually spin each pulley to check for rough bearings, wobble, or unusual noise. Inspect the tensioner arm for smooth movement and proper spring tension. Check all pulley surfaces for damage, wear grooves, or oil contamination that could cause premature belt failure.
- 6Route the new beltFollowing the routing diagram, install the new belt around all pulleys EXCEPT the tensioner pulley. Typical routing: crankshaft (bottom) → water pump (top left) → alternator (top right) → A/C compressor (middle right) → ending at tensioner position (middle left). Ensure the belt ribs are properly seated in each pulley groove.
- 7Install belt onto tensionerUsing the 14mm socket and breaker bar, rotate the tensioner clockwise again to create slack. While holding the tensioner, slip the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Verify the belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves, then slowly and carefully release the tensioner to apply tension to the belt.
- 8Verify belt installationVisually verify the belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves with ribs fully engaged. The belt should not be twisted and should run true on all pulleys. Check that the belt routing matches the diagram exactly. Manually rotate the crankshaft one full revolution clockwise using a socket on the crankshaft bolt to ensure the belt tracks properly.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the passenger-side plastic undercover with all clips and bolts properly secured
- Lower the vehicle from jack stands
Verification
- Start the engine and observe belt operation for at least 30 seconds. The belt should run smoothly without squealing, vibration, or visible wobble
- Listen for any unusual noises from pulleys or bearings that may have been masked by the old belt
- Turn on the A/C system and verify the compressor clutch engages properly and the belt handles the additional load without slipping
- Rev the engine slightly to 2000 RPM and verify smooth belt operation at higher speeds
- After the first 50-100 miles of driving, perform a visual inspection to ensure the belt has not slipped out of position or developed abnormal wear
