Blend Door Actuator

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the HVAC blend door actuator, which controls air temperature distribution in the cabin.

• Blend door actuator × 1 — Honda OEM 79140-TVA-A01 or equivalent
• Retaining clips (if broken) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
4. Allow HVAC system to reach ambient temperature if recently operated
5. Set front seats to full rearward position for working access

Procedure

   Remove Lower Passenger Glove Box
   Open the glove box fully. Press inward on both side stops to allow glove box to swing down past normal range. Disconnect glove box damper arm from right side. Remove Phillips screws securing glove box hinge and carefully remove glove box assembly from dashboard.

   Remove Lower Dashboard Panel
   Locate lower dashboard trim panel below glove box opening on passenger side. Using panel removal tool, carefully pry out retaining clips starting from bottom edge. Work around perimeter to release all clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors for courtesy lights if equipped. Remove panel and set aside.

   Locate Blend Door Actuator
   Using flashlight, locate the blend door actuator on the HVAC housing. It is a small rectangular motor mounted to the air distribution housing with a gear visible on one end. The actuator will have an electrical connector attached. Note the position of the actuator and its connection to the blend door linkage.

   Disconnect Actuator Electrical Connector
   Press the locking tab on the actuator electrical connector and carefully pull straight out to disconnect. Do not pull on wires. If connector is difficult to access, use a small flathead screwdriver to depress locking tab while pulling connector.

   Remove Actuator Mounting Screws
   Remove the three Phillips screws securing the blend door actuator to the HVAC housing. Support the actuator while removing the final screw to prevent it from falling. Note the screw locations and any orientation markings on the actuator.
   Torque spec

   Actuator Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)

   Detach Actuator from Blend Door
   Gently rotate the actuator counterclockwise approximately 15-20 degrees to disengage the drive gear from the blend door shaft. Carefully pull actuator away from housing. Do not force or twist the blend door shaft itself.
   ⚠If resistance is felt, verify actuator gear is properly disengaged before pulling. Forcing may damage blend door mechanism.

   Inspect Blend Door Operation
   With actuator removed, manually rotate the blend door shaft to verify smooth operation throughout full range of motion. Check for binding, broken linkage, or foreign objects. The shaft should rotate freely approximately 90 degrees. If binding occurs, HVAC housing service may be required.

   Install New Blend Door Actuator
   Position new actuator near blend door shaft. Align actuator drive gear with blend door shaft slot. The actuator will only fit in one orientation. Gently press actuator onto shaft while rotating slightly to engage gear teeth. Ensure actuator seats flush against HVAC housing.

   Install Actuator Mounting Screws
   Install all three mounting screws by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten screws in a star pattern to specification using torque wrench. Do not overtighten as housing is plastic and threads may strip.
   ⚠Actuator screws thread into plastic housing. Use torque wrench and do not exceed specified torque to prevent thread damage.

    Reconnect Electrical Connector
    Push electrical connector onto actuator until locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on connector to verify secure connection. Ensure wiring is not pinched or routed near sharp edges.

    Perform Initial Function Test
    Reconnect negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Cycle HVAC temperature control from full cold to full hot and back several times. Listen for smooth actuator operation without grinding or clicking sounds. Verify operation before reinstalling panels.

    Reinstall Lower Dashboard Panel
    Reconnect any electrical connectors for courtesy lights. Align panel clips with dashboard receptacles. Press firmly around perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Verify panel is secure with no gaps.

    Reinstall Glove Box Assembly
    Position glove box hinge into dashboard opening. Install Phillips screws securing hinge. Reconnect damper arm to right side of glove box. Test glove box operation through full range ensuring side stops engage properly when closed.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trim panels are properly seated and all retaining clips are engaged
2. Verify glove box opens and closes smoothly with damper functioning correctly
3. Reset clock and radio presets as needed after battery reconnection

Verification

• Start engine and allow HVAC system to reach operating temperature
• Test temperature control through full range from maximum cold to maximum hot
• Verify air temperature changes smoothly at all vents without delays or inconsistent temperatures
• Listen for any abnormal clicking, grinding, or buzzing from behind dashboard during temperature adjustments
• Test all HVAC modes (defrost, floor, dash vents) to ensure actuator does not interfere with mode door operation
• Check for proper airflow distribution and confirm no air leaks from trim panels
