Replace the brake light switch located on the brake pedal assembly to restore brake light and cruise control functionality.
Warnings
⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL REPAIR: Brake lights are essential for preventing rear-end collisions. Improper installation can result in brake lights that do not illuminate when braking, creating extreme hazard to following traffic. Verify complete functionality before operating vehicle on public roads.
⚠️The brake light switch also controls cruise control disengagement and shift-lock functions. Incorrect installation may prevent cruise control from canceling during braking or cause transmission shift issues.
⚠Work in a well-lit area. The brake pedal assembly is located in a confined space under the dashboard requiring awkward positioning.
ℹ️If brake lights were intermittent or inoperative, check for stored diagnostic trouble codes after repair as the vehicle may have logged faults.
Tools required
Flashlight or work lightEssential
Trim panel removal tool or flathead screwdriver
10mm socket or wrench
Needle nose pliers
Parts
- Brake light switch × 1 — Honda OEM 46545-T2A-A01 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake firmly
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle
- Open driver's door and adjust seat fully rearward for maximum working room
- Allow vehicle to sit for at least 5 minutes if recently driven to allow brake pedal components to cool
- Gather flashlight and tools for working in confined space under dashboard
Procedure
- 1Access brake pedal assembly areaPosition yourself in the driver's footwell with flashlight. Locate the brake pedal assembly above the brake pedal pad. The brake light switch is mounted on a bracket near the top of the pedal arm, directly behind where the pedal pivots. You may need to remove the lower dashboard trim panel for better access, though many technicians can complete this job without panel removal on the 2018-2024 Accord.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the brake light switch body. The connector has a locking tab on one side. Press the locking tab firmly while pulling the connector straight away from the switch. The connector may be stiff due to years of being connected - do not pull on the wires themselves, only the connector body. If access is difficult, you may need to disconnect the connector by feel.
- 3Identify switch mounting methodThe brake light switch on this vehicle is secured by one of two methods depending on production date: either a twist-lock mechanism (quarter-turn) or a sliding clip arrangement. Examine the switch body and bracket to determine which type is installed. The twist-lock type has alignment marks, while the clip type has a release tab on the side of the mounting bracket.
- 4Remove old brake light switchFor twist-lock type: Rotate the switch body counterclockwise approximately 45 degrees until it releases from the bracket, then pull straight out. For clip type: Depress the release tab on the bracket while pulling the switch straight out away from the pedal assembly. Note the position and orientation of the switch plunger in relation to the brake pedal arm - the plunger should be fully extended when pedal is at rest.
- 5Inspect brake pedal contact pointWith the old switch removed, examine the area where the switch plunger contacts the brake pedal or pedal arm. Look for wear, debris, or damage. Clean any dirt or corrosion from the mounting bracket. Verify the brake pedal returns fully to the rest position with normal spring tension. If the pedal does not return properly or feels binding, investigate pedal pivot issues before installing new switch.
- 6Prepare new brake light switchRemove new brake light switch from packaging. Verify it matches the old switch in design (twist-lock vs clip type). The switch plunger should be fully extended in the new switch. Do NOT depress or adjust the plunger before installation - the switch is pre-adjusted from the factory and will self-adjust when installed and the brake pedal is depressed.
- 7Install new brake light switchAlign the new switch with the mounting bracket, ensuring the plunger faces toward the brake pedal contact point. For twist-lock type: Insert switch straight into bracket and rotate clockwise 45 degrees until it locks with an audible click. For clip type: Push switch straight into bracket until the locking tab engages with a click. Ensure switch is fully seated and cannot be pulled out without releasing the lock mechanism.
- 8Connect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the new brake light switch until the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is locked and seated properly. Route the wiring to ensure it will not interfere with brake pedal movement through its full range of travel.
- 9Perform initial switch adjustment verificationWithout turning on the ignition, slowly press the brake pedal while observing the switch plunger (use flashlight). The plunger should compress as the pedal moves away from it. When you release the pedal, it should return to contact the switch plunger fully, and the plunger should extend back out. This mechanical action operates the internal switch contacts. The switch should click audibly during pedal operation.
Reassembly
- Reinstall lower dashboard trim panel if it was removed, ensuring all clips are fully engaged
- Return driver's seat to normal position
- Close driver's door
Verification
- CRITICAL: Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run). Verify brake lights are OFF with pedal released
- CRITICAL: Press brake pedal and verify BOTH outer brake lights and center high-mount brake light illuminate immediately. Have an assistant observe or use a mirror/phone camera
- CRITICAL: Release brake pedal and verify all brake lights turn OFF immediately with no delay or flickering
- Repeat brake light test 10-15 times, pressing pedal from various positions (light pressure, medium, full) to verify consistent operation
- Test cruise control cancel function: If vehicle has cruise control, start engine and activate cruise control, then tap brake pedal lightly - cruise should cancel immediately
- Test shift-lock function: With ignition ON and transmission in PARK, verify you cannot move shifter out of PARK without pressing brake pedal
- Clear any stored brake light switch fault codes using OBD-II scanner if applicable
- FINAL VERIFICATION: Test drive vehicle in safe area and verify brake lights illuminate during actual braking before returning to public roads
