Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold (has not run for at least 2 hours)
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Open hood and allow engine compartment to ventilate
- Verify coolant level is at FULL mark on reservoir before testing
- Visually inspect all visible hoses, clamps, and radiator for obvious damage or wetness
Procedure
- 1Access radiator capLocate the radiator cap on the driver side of the radiator behind the front bumper. The cap is accessed from above between the upper radiator hose and reservoir. Clean any debris around the cap area with a shop towel.
- 2Remove radiator capVerify engine is cold by touching the upper radiator hose. Slowly turn the radiator cap counterclockwise to the first stop and allow any residual pressure to release. Once pressure is released, press down and continue turning counterclockwise to remove the cap completely. Inspect the cap gasket for cracks or deterioration.
- 3Check coolant levelUsing a flashlight, verify coolant is visible at the radiator neck opening. Coolant should be at or near the top of the radiator. If low, add Honda Type 2 coolant until visible at the neck. Low coolant will prevent accurate pressure testing.
- 4Install pressure testerSelect the correct adapter for the Honda radiator neck from your pressure tester kit. Install the adapter onto the radiator opening, ensuring it seats fully and evenly. Thread or attach the pressure tester to the adapter according to the tester manufacturer's instructions. Verify all connections are secure.
- 5Pressurize the systemSlowly pump the pressure tester to bring the system to 15 PSI (1.0 bar), which is the typical Honda cooling system operating pressure. Do not exceed 18 PSI. Observe the pressure gauge. The system should hold pressure with minimal drop (less than 2 PSI in 2 minutes indicates a healthy system).
- 6Monitor pressure dropWatch the pressure gauge for 10 minutes. Note the pressure reading at 2-minute intervals. A pressure drop greater than 2 PSI in the first 2 minutes or continuous pressure loss indicates a leak. Minor fluctuations due to temperature stabilization are normal.
- 7Inspect for external leaksWhile system is under pressure, systematically inspect all cooling system components: radiator (especially plastic end tanks and seams), upper and lower radiator hoses, heater hoses at firewall, thermostat housing, water pump area below timing cover, and all hose clamps. Look for drips, wetness, or coolant seepage. Use inspection mirror for hard-to-see areas.
- 8Check engine and cabinInspect the oil filler cap and dipstick for milky residue indicating head gasket failure. Check inside the vehicle cabin carpet on passenger side for wetness indicating heater core leak. Check the expansion tank and cap for leaks while pressurized.
- 9Release pressureOnce testing is complete, slowly release pressure using the tester's pressure relief valve. Allow pressure to drop to zero before attempting to remove the tester. Do not remove the tester while system is pressurized.
- 10Remove tester and reinstall capRemove the pressure tester and adapter from the radiator neck. Wipe the radiator neck sealing surface clean with a shop towel. Reinstall the radiator cap by pressing down and turning clockwise until it stops and locks into position. Ensure cap is fully seated.
Reassembly
- Top off coolant reservoir to FULL mark if any coolant was lost during testing
- Wipe down any coolant spills in engine compartment
- If leaks were found, mark locations with tape or marker for repair
Verification
- System should hold 15 PSI with less than 2 PSI drop over 10 minutes for a healthy cooling system
- No visible coolant leaks, wetness, or seepage at any component during pressurized inspection
- Radiator cap properly installed and locked in place
- If system failed pressure test, identify and repair leak source before returning vehicle to service
- Start engine after test completion and verify normal operating temperature and no warning lights
