This procedure covers removal and replacement of the EGR cooler on the 2018-2024 Honda Accord 1.5L turbo engine, including coolant drainage, exhaust component removal, and proper reassembly with new gaskets.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely for at least 2 hours before beginning work. Hot coolant under pressure can cause severe burns.
⚠️Exhaust components remain extremely hot for extended periods. Verify all components are cool to touch before removal.
The EGR cooler is integrated with coolant passages. Coolant will drain from multiple locations during removal.
Do not apply anti-seize to oxygen sensor tip or element. Apply only to threads.
ℹ️This procedure requires draining a portion of the cooling system. Have adequate drain capacity and replacement coolant ready.

  7. Locate radiator drain plug on driver side lower tank and drain approximately 2 quarts of coolant into drain pan

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove engine heat shields
Remove the upper engine heat shield by removing the mounting bolts. The heat shield covers the turbocharger and exhaust components. Store bolts for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Heat Shield Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Disconnect oxygen sensor
Locate the upstream oxygen sensor on the exhaust downpipe near the turbocharger outlet. Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab. Using an oxygen sensor socket, unthread the sensor. Apply penetrating oil if necessary and allow to soak for 10 minutes if sensor is difficult to remove.
Oxygen sensors are fragile. Do not use excessive force or impact tools which may damage the sensor element.
    Torque spec
    O2 Sensor45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove exhaust downpipe connection
Locate the exhaust flange connection between the turbocharger outlet and the front exhaust pipe. Support the exhaust pipe with a jack stand or wire hanger to prevent strain. Remove the two exhaust flange bolts and separate the connection. Remove and discard the old gasket.
Exhaust flange bolts may be corroded. Apply penetrating oil and allow to soak if bolts are difficult to remove.
    Torque spec
    Exhaust Flange Bolts45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Disconnect EGR valve electrical connector
Locate the EGR valve mounted on top of the EGR cooler assembly. Press the release tab and disconnect the electrical connector. Move the wiring harness aside to provide clearance.
  5. 5
    Remove EGR pipe connection
Locate the EGR pipe that connects from the EGR cooler to the intake manifold. Remove the flange bolts securing this connection. Separate the pipe and remove the old gasket. Place additional drain pan underneath as residual coolant may drain from passages.
    Torque spec
    Exhaust Flange Bolts45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
  6. 6
Disconnect coolant hoses from EGR cooler
Locate the two coolant hoses connected to the EGR cooler (inlet and outlet). Using hose clamp pliers, compress and slide the spring clamps away from the cooler connections. Gently twist and pull the hoses from the cooler ports. Have drain pan positioned to catch residual coolant (approximately 0.5 quarts will drain).
ℹ️Mark coolant hose orientation before removal to ensure correct reinstallation.
  7. 7
    Remove EGR cooler mounting bolts
Locate the mounting bolts securing the EGR cooler assembly to the cylinder head and exhaust manifold. There are typically 3-4 mounting bolts accessible from above and the side. Remove all mounting bolts while supporting the cooler assembly.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Remove EGR cooler assembly
Carefully maneuver the EGR cooler assembly upward and out of the engine bay. The assembly must be tilted and rotated to clear surrounding components. Take note of routing and orientation for installation. Remove and discard all old gaskets from mating surfaces on the cylinder head and exhaust connections.
  9. 9
    Clean all mating surfaces
Using a gasket scraper and wire brush, thoroughly clean all gasket mating surfaces on the cylinder head, exhaust ports, and EGR pipe flange. Remove all old gasket material and carbon deposits. Wipe surfaces clean with a lint-free cloth. Inspect surfaces for damage, warping, or cracks.
Do not gouge or scratch sealing surfaces. Deep scratches may prevent proper sealing and cause coolant or exhaust leaks.
  10. 10
    Install new EGR cooler assembly
Position new gaskets on all mating surfaces (cylinder head, exhaust connection, EGR pipe flange). Carefully maneuver the new EGR cooler assembly into position, ensuring gaskets remain properly aligned. Start all mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement before tightening.
  11. 11
    Torque EGR cooler mounting bolts
Using a torque wrench, tighten all EGR cooler mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern sequence to ensure even clamping force and proper gasket seating.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect coolant hoses
Reconnect both coolant hoses to the EGR cooler inlet and outlet ports according to your earlier markings. Ensure hoses are fully seated on the ports. Position and compress spring clamps to secure hoses in place. Verify clamps are positioned over the hose barbs.
  13. 13
    Reconnect EGR pipe
Install new gasket on the EGR pipe flange. Connect the EGR pipe to the EGR cooler and intake manifold. Install flange bolts and tighten to specification in a cross-pattern.
    Torque spec
    Exhaust Flange Bolts45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
  14. 14
    Reconnect exhaust downpipe

    Refill cooling system
Close the radiator drain plug. Using Honda Type 2 (Blue) coolant, refill the cooling system through the radiator cap opening. Fill until coolant reaches the base of the filler neck. Start engine and allow to warm up to operating temperature with heater on maximum. Monitor coolant level and add as needed as air purges from system. Once at operating temperature, shut off engine and allow to cool, then top off coolant to proper level.
Never open radiator cap when engine is hot. Always allow engine to cool before removing cap.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect negative battery terminal and tighten securely
  2. Verify all electrical connectors are properly seated and locked
  3. Check for proper clearance around all reinstalled components
  4. Ensure no tools or shop towels were left in engine compartment

Verification
