Replace worn or damaged rubber exhaust hangers to restore proper exhaust system positioning and eliminate rattling or excessive movement on the 2018-2024 Honda Accord 1.5L Turbo.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
3. Ensure exhaust system is completely cool to the touch
4. Raise vehicle with floor jack at designated lift points and support with jack stands at frame rails
5. Locate the damaged or worn exhaust hanger(s) from underneath - common locations include mid-pipe, resonator, and rear muffler sections
6. Apply penetrating oil to hanger mounting points if corroded (allow 10-15 minutes to penetrate)

Procedure

   Inspect exhaust system and identify hangers
   Visually inspect all exhaust hangers along the exhaust system. The 1.5L Turbo Accord typically has 4-5 rubber hangers between the catalytic converter and rear muffler. Check for cracking, tearing, or separation from the metal hooks. Note the orientation and position of each hanger before removal.

   Support exhaust system weight
   If replacing multiple hangers, use a floor jack with a block of wood under the muffler or mid-pipe to support the exhaust system weight. This prevents the exhaust from dropping and stressing remaining hangers or connections during the repair.

   Remove damaged exhaust hanger from frame bracket
   Using a flathead screwdriver or pry bar, carefully pry the rubber hanger loop off the metal hook welded to the vehicle frame. Work the screwdriver between the rubber and hook, applying gentle leverage. If the hanger is severely deteriorated, it may tear during removal - this is normal for worn hangers.

   Remove hanger from exhaust pipe bracket
   Once freed from the frame hook, remove the other end of the rubber hanger from the metal bracket on the exhaust pipe. This may require pulling the exhaust pipe downward slightly to create slack. The hanger should slide off the exhaust-side hook with moderate force.

   Clean mounting points
   Clean both the frame-side and exhaust-side metal hooks with a wire brush to remove rust, debris, and old rubber residue. This ensures proper seating of the new hanger and prevents premature failure.

   Install new exhaust hanger onto exhaust bracket
   Begin installation by attaching one loop of the new rubber hanger onto the metal hook on the exhaust pipe bracket. Apply a small amount of liquid soap or silicone spray to the hanger loops to ease installation if needed. Ensure the hanger is fully seated on the hook.

   Connect hanger to frame bracket
   Pull or pry the exhaust system into position to align with the frame-side hook. Stretch the second loop of the rubber hanger over the frame hook using the flathead screwdriver or pry bar as a lever. Verify both loops are completely seated on their respective hooks with no twisted rubber.

   Verify exhaust alignment and clearance
   Remove the support jack from under the exhaust. Visually inspect the entire exhaust system to ensure proper alignment and that there is adequate clearance (minimum 25mm) between exhaust components and the underbody, suspension components, and fuel tank. Push upward on the muffler and pipes to check for binding or contact points.

Reassembly

1. No disassembly of other components is typically required for this procedure
2. Ensure all hangers are properly seated and exhaust system moves freely with no contact points
3. If heat shields were removed for access, reinstall with original fasteners

Verification

• Start engine and listen for any new exhaust leaks or rattling noises
• Have an assistant gently rock the vehicle side-to-side while observing exhaust movement - system should move slightly but return to center position without contacting underbody
• Take a short test drive and listen for any abnormal exhaust noise or vibration
• Recheck exhaust hanger installation after 50-100 miles of driving to ensure hangers remain properly seated
