This procedure replaces the fuel pump assembly on a 2018-2024 Honda Accord 1.5L Turbo by accessing it through the rear seat floor panel, requiring fuel system depressurization and disconnection of electrical and fuel lines.

Warnings

⚠️FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD: Gasoline is extremely flammable. Work in a well-ventilated area with no ignition sources (sparks, flames, cigarettes, pilot lights). Have a Class B fire extinguisher immediately accessible.
⚠️FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE: System operates at high pressure. Failure to properly relieve pressure before disconnecting lines will cause fuel spray that can ignite or cause injury.
⚠️IMPROPER INSTALLATION: Incorrectly installed fuel pump or improperly torqued lock ring can cause fuel leaks, fire, or fuel starvation leading to engine damage or loss of vehicle control.
Fuel will drain from pump module during removal. Have absorbent materials ready and dispose of fuel-soaked materials properly. Gasoline vapors are heavier than air and accumulate in low areas.
Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the fuel tank during pump removal. Contamination can damage fuel injectors and fuel system components.
ℹ️If you are uncomfortable working with fuel systems or lack proper tools, have this service performed by a qualified professional. Errors can result in fire or death.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure fuel tank is less than 1/2 full to minimize spillage (drain if necessary)
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for system discharge
  4. Work in well-ventilated area away from all ignition sources
  5. Position fire extinguisher within immediate reach
  6. Have fuel-resistant container available for residual fuel drainage

Procedure

  1. 1
    Relieve fuel system pressure
Locate the fuel pump relay in the under-hood fuse box (relay #40, 20A fuel pump relay). Remove the relay. Reconnect the negative battery cable temporarily. Attempt to start the engine - it should start briefly then stall as pressure is relieved. Crank engine for 3-5 seconds after stalling to ensure complete depressurization. Disconnect negative battery cable again. This step is critical to prevent fuel spray during line disconnection.
  2. 2
    Remove rear seat cushion
Push down and pull up firmly on the front edge of the rear seat bottom cushion to disengage the two retaining clips. Lift the cushion out of the vehicle. The fuel pump access cover is located under the driver's side of the seat, in the floor pan.
  3. 3
    Remove fuel pump access cover
Remove the Phillips screws securing the rectangular metal or plastic access cover (typically 4-6 screws). Carefully lift the cover and set aside. You will see the top of the fuel pump module with electrical connector and fuel lines attached. Clean area thoroughly with shop towels to prevent debris from entering tank.
  4. 4
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the fuel pump module electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect. The connector is a large multi-pin connector on top of the pump module. Do not pull on wires - pull on connector body only.
  5. 5
    Disconnect fuel lines
Using fuel line disconnect tools, release the quick-connect fittings on the fuel feed line (larger line) and return line (smaller line, if equipped). Push the disconnect tool onto the line, press in to release the internal lock, then pull the line straight off. Expect residual fuel spillage - have towels ready. Cap or plug the lines to prevent contamination.
Residual fuel under pressure may spray when disconnecting lines even after system depressurization. Keep face and ignition sources away.
  6. 6
    Remove fuel pump lock ring
Install the Honda fuel pump lock ring tool (07AAA-SOXA100 or equivalent spanner wrench) onto the lock ring tabs. The lock ring has 8 tabs and secures the entire pump module. Turn COUNTERCLOCKWISE to loosen. Initial breakaway may require significant force - use controlled pressure to avoid slipping and damaging tank. Once loose, unthread completely by hand and remove lock ring.

  7. 7
    Remove fuel pump module assembly
Carefully lift the fuel pump module straight up and out of the tank opening. Tilt the module slightly as needed to clear the opening, but avoid bending the fuel level sender arm (float arm on side of module). Module will have residual fuel - hold over fuel-resistant container or shop towels. Note the orientation of the module and position of alignment marks for reinstallation.
The fuel level sender arm is delicate and easily bent. A bent sender will cause inaccurate fuel gauge readings.
  8. 8
    Remove and inspect seal
Remove the rubber seal/gasket from the fuel tank opening. Inspect the tank opening for any debris, corrosion, or damage. Clean the sealing surface thoroughly with a lint-free cloth. Never reuse the old seal - always install the new seal provided with the replacement pump module.
  9. 9
    Install new fuel pump module
Install the new seal onto the replacement fuel pump module, ensuring it is seated properly in its groove. Verify the fuel strainer (sock filter) at bottom of new module is clean and properly attached. Carefully lower the new pump module into the tank opening, aligning any alignment marks or tabs with corresponding features in the tank. The module will only fit in one orientation. Push down gently until module seats against the seal.
Ensure no debris falls into the fuel tank during installation. Even small particles can damage fuel injectors.
  10. 10
    Install and torque lock ring
Position the fuel pump lock ring over the module threads. Thread the lock ring clockwise by hand until finger-tight. Install the lock ring tool and torque the lock ring to exactly 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) in a smooth, controlled motion. This torque is critical for proper seal and preventing fuel leaks. Verify the module is fully seated and seal is evenly compressed around entire circumference.
⚠️CRITICAL TORQUE SPECIFICATION: Lock ring must be torqued to exactly 80 Nm (59 lb-ft). Under-torquing causes fuel leaks and fire risk. Over-torquing can crack the tank flange.

  11. 11
    Reconnect fuel lines
Remove caps/plugs from fuel lines. Push each fuel line straight onto its corresponding quick-connect fitting on the pump module until you hear and feel a distinct click. Pull back on each line to verify it is locked - it should not pull off. Ensure lines are not kinked or stressed.
  12. 12
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align and push the electrical connector straight onto the fuel pump module connector until the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently to verify connection is secure.
  13. 13
    Reinstall access cover and seat
Position the access cover over the opening, ensuring any foam sealing strips are in place. Install and tighten the Phillips screws to 4.0 Nm (3.0 lb-ft) in a cross-pattern. Reinstall the rear seat cushion by aligning the rear hooks and pushing down firmly on the front edge until both clips engage.
  14. 14
Restore power and prime fuel system
Reinstall the fuel pump relay in the under-hood fuse box. Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten securely. Turn the ignition key to ON position (do not start engine) for 2 seconds, then OFF. Repeat this ON-OFF cycle 3-4 times to allow the fuel pump to prime the system and build pressure. Check for fuel leaks around all connections at the pump module access area.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all fuel line quick-connects are fully seated and locked before starting engine
  2. Verify access cover screws are tight and cover is properly sealed
  3. Confirm rear seat cushion is securely latched in both positions
  4. Properly dispose of old fuel pump assembly and fuel-soaked materials according to local regulations

Verification

  • With engine off and ignition ON, listen for fuel pump operation (2-second priming hum from rear of vehicle)
  • Inspect fuel pump access area for any signs of fuel leakage with ignition ON
  • Start engine and let idle for 2-3 minutes while monitoring for fuel leaks, unusual noises, or check engine light
  • Verify fuel gauge reads correctly and changes appropriately when ignition is cycled
  • Test drive vehicle briefly and verify normal acceleration and no fuel starvation symptoms
  • Recheck all connection points for leaks after test drive with vehicle cool
  • Scan for diagnostic trouble codes - there should be no fuel system codes present
