Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley) on the 2018-2024 Honda Accord 1.5L Turbo engine, including accessory drive belt removal and proper torque specifications.

Warnings

⚠️Ensure engine is cool before beginning work. Hot components can cause severe burns.
⚠️The crankshaft pulley bolt is extremely tight (180 Nm). Attempting removal without proper crankshaft locking can cause engine rotation and injury.
The harmonic balancer bolt is a torque-to-yield (TTY) fastener and must be replaced. Do not reuse the old bolt.
Improper installation of the harmonic balancer can cause crankshaft damage, timing issues, or catastrophic engine failure.
Never use a traditional gear puller on the outer edge of the harmonic balancer. Use only a proper harmonic balancer puller that grips behind the pulley hub.
ℹ️The engine may need to be supported when removing the passenger side engine mount for access.

Parts

  • Harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley × 1 — Honda OEM 13810-5AA-A01 or equivalent
  • Harmonic balancer bolt × 1 — Use OEM specification (TTY bolt)
  • Accessory drive belt × 1 — Replace if worn or damaged

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system discharge
  4. Raise and secure front of vehicle on jack stands
  5. Remove passenger side front wheel for better access
  6. Remove plastic engine splash shield/undertray

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove passenger side engine mount bracket
Support the engine using a floor jack with a block of wood under the oil pan. Remove the passenger side engine mount and mounting bracket to gain clear access to the harmonic balancer. Remove mounting bolts securing the engine mount bracket to the engine block.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Release accessory belt tensioner
Locate the serpentine belt tensioner on the front of the engine. Using a breaker bar or wrench on the tensioner bolt, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to release tension. Remove the accessory drive belt from all pulleys and note the routing diagram (photograph if necessary).
  3. 3
    Lock the crankshaft
Install a crankshaft holding tool or flywheel locking tool through the bell housing access port or by accessing the flywheel from underneath. This prevents the crankshaft from rotating during bolt removal. Alternatively, have an assistant hold the crankshaft using a large wrench on the balancer bolt while in gear (manual) or with brakes applied firmly.
⚠️Do not attempt to remove the harmonic balancer bolt without properly securing the crankshaft. The engine can rotate unexpectedly.
  4. 4
    Remove harmonic balancer center bolt
Using a breaker bar or impact wrench with appropriate socket (typically 19mm), remove the harmonic balancer center bolt. This bolt is torqued to 180 Nm and will require significant force. An impact wrench is recommended. Remove the bolt and any washers completely.
This is a torque-to-yield bolt and must not be reused. Discard the old bolt.

    Harmonic Balancer Bolt180 Nm (133 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove harmonic balancer
Install a proper harmonic balancer puller tool onto the balancer hub. The puller bolts should thread into the threaded holes in the balancer (not behind the pulley edge). Tighten the puller center bolt gradually and evenly to pull the balancer off the crankshaft snout. Do not use excessive force or a traditional gear puller.
Never strike the balancer with a hammer or use a puller that grips the outer edge. This can damage the balancer damper element.
  6. 6
    Inspect crankshaft and balancer
Inspect the crankshaft snout for damage, scoring, or wear. Check the keyway for damage. Inspect the harmonic balancer hub surface for wear or damage. Clean the crankshaft snout and the inside bore of the new harmonic balancer with a clean cloth. Check that the Woodruff key (if equipped) is properly seated in the crankshaft keyway.
  7. 7
    Install new harmonic balancer
Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the crankshaft snout and the inside bore of the new harmonic balancer. Align the keyway (if equipped) and slide the balancer onto the crankshaft by hand as far as possible. Use a harmonic balancer installation tool (or large socket and bolt) to draw the balancer onto the crankshaft. Do not hammer the balancer onto the shaft.
Never use an impact tool to drive the balancer onto the crankshaft. This can damage the balancer or crankshaft.
  8. 8
    Install new harmonic balancer bolt
Install the new harmonic balancer bolt with any washers in the correct orientation. With the crankshaft still locked in place, hand-thread the new bolt to prevent cross-threading. Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolt to 180 Nm (133 lb-ft). Verify the balancer is fully seated against the crankshaft shoulder with no gap visible.
Use only a new TTY bolt. Verify proper seating of the balancer before final torque. Check service manual for any additional angle torque requirements.

  9. 9
    Reinstall accessory drive belt
Route the accessory drive belt around all pulleys according to the routing diagram. Rotate the belt tensioner counterclockwise and slide the belt onto the final pulley. Release the tensioner slowly to apply proper tension. Verify the belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.
  10. 10
    Reinstall engine mount bracket
Reinstall the passenger side engine mount bracket and mounting bolts. Torque the mounting bolts to specification (verify which size bolts: 26 Nm for smaller bolts or 45 Nm for larger critical mounting bolts). Remove the floor jack supporting the engine.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall plastic engine splash shield/undertray
  2. Reinstall passenger side front wheel and torque lug nuts to Honda specification (108 Nm / 80 lb-ft)
  3. Lower vehicle to ground
  4. Reconnect negative battery terminal
  5. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify no unusual vibrations or noises from the front of the engine
  • Check that the accessory belt is tracking properly on all pulleys with no squealing
  • Verify all engine mounts are secure and engine is stable
  • Perform a visual inspection underneath for any missed components or loose fasteners
  • Test drive vehicle and confirm smooth operation at various RPM ranges
  • Re-inspect harmonic balancer bolt and mounting bolts after 50-100 miles for proper torque retention
