Neutral Safety Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the neutral safety switch (also called the transmission range switch) on the CVT transmission of a 2018-2024 Honda Accord with the 1.5L turbo engine.

• O-ring seal for switch × 1 — Usually included with switch assembly

Fluids

• Honda DW-1 ATF — 1 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jack stands
4. Remove the front driver's side wheel for improved access (optional but recommended)
5. Remove the engine under cover using 10mm bolts and plastic clips
6. Allow transmission to cool if vehicle was recently driven

Procedure

1. 1

   Locate the transmission range switch
   From underneath the vehicle on the driver's side, locate the transmission range switch on the side of the CVT transmission case. It is a black component with an electrical connector and is positioned near the shift cable connection point.

   Disconnect the electrical connector
   Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull it away from the transmission range switch. Move the wiring harness aside to provide working clearance.

   Position drain pan
   Place a drain pan directly beneath the transmission range switch location. When the switch is removed, transmission fluid will drain from the opening. Have shop towels ready to minimize spillage.
   ⚠Transmission fluid may still be warm. Avoid skin contact and wear appropriate gloves.

   Remove switch mounting bolts
   Using a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts securing the transmission range switch to the transmission case. Keep these bolts in a safe location for reinstallation.

   Remove the old switch
   Carefully pull the transmission range switch straight out from the transmission case. Fluid will immediately begin draining. Tilt the switch to minimize spillage and allow fluid to drain into the pan. Remove and discard the old O-ring seal from the switch or transmission case bore.

   Clean the mounting surface
   Use shop towels to clean the transmission case mounting surface and bore where the switch seats. Ensure no debris, old seal material, or contamination remains on the sealing surface.

   Install new O-ring
   Install the new O-ring seal onto the replacement transmission range switch. Lightly coat the O-ring with clean Honda DW-1 ATF to aid installation and prevent damage during insertion.

   Install new switch
   Align the transmission range switch with the mounting holes and shaft position. Insert the switch straight into the transmission case bore, ensuring the O-ring seats properly without pinching or rolling. Push firmly until the switch is fully seated against the transmission case.
   ⚠Do not force the switch. Ensure proper alignment with the internal detent mechanism before pushing into place.

   Install and torque mounting bolts
   Install the two mounting bolts and hand-tighten them. Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolts in a crossing pattern to 10.0 Nm (8.0 lb-ft) following the Sensor Bolts specification.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Reconnect the electrical connector to the transmission range switch, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged.

    Reinstall under cover and wheel
    Reinstall the engine under cover using the plastic clips and 10mm bolts. If removed, reinstall the driver's side front wheel. Lower the vehicle from jack stands.

    Refill transmission fluid
    Check the transmission fluid level using the CVT fluid check procedure. Add Honda DW-1 ATF as needed to restore the proper level, typically 0.5-1.0 quarts to replace fluid lost during switch removal.

Reassembly

1. Torque all fasteners to specified values using a calibrated torque wrench
2. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
3. Verify no transmission fluid leaks are present around the switch after refilling

Verification

• Start the engine and verify it only starts in Park and Neutral positions
• With the engine running and brake pedal depressed, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-S-L) and confirm smooth operation
• Check that the gear position indicator on the instrument cluster accurately reflects the shifter position in all gears
• Verify the backup lights illuminate when shifted into Reverse
• Recheck the area around the transmission range switch for any fluid leaks after a short test drive
• Clear any diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool if a check engine light was present before the repair
