Oil Change

This procedure covers draining the engine oil, replacing the oil filter and drain plug crush washer, and refilling with Honda Genuine 0W-20 synthetic motor oil on the 2018-2024 Honda Accord with 1.5L turbocharged engine.

Parts

• Engine oil filter (cartridge-type) × 1 — Honda 15400-5L3-A01 or equivalent
• Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — Honda 94109-14000 (14mm)

Fluids

• Honda Genuine 0W-20 synthetic engine oil — 4 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes if recently operated
3. Raise and secure front of vehicle using ramps or jack stands to access drain plug from underneath
4. Gather all tools, new filter, crush washer, and 4 quarts of Honda Genuine 0W-20 oil
5. Open hood and locate oil filler cap on top of engine (driver's side valve cover)

Procedure

1. 1

   Access drain plug
   Position yourself under the vehicle with drain pan ready. Locate the oil drain plug on the passenger side of the oil pan, facing rearward. Clean area around drain plug with shop towel to prevent debris from entering oil pan.

   Drain engine oil
   Using a 17mm socket or wrench, loosen the drain plug counter-clockwise. Once loose, carefully unscrew by hand (oil will begin flowing). Remove drain plug completely and allow oil to drain fully into pan for at least 5 minutes. Inspect old crush washer on drain plug and discard it.
   ⚠Oil may still be warm. Be prepared for initial surge of oil when plug is removed.

   Install drain plug with new crush washer
   Clean drain plug threads and oil pan drain hole with shop towel. Install new crush washer onto drain plug. Thread drain plug into oil pan by hand to prevent cross-threading. Torque drain plug to specification using torque wrench.
   ⚠Always use a new crush washer. Reusing old washer may cause oil leaks.
   Torque spec

   Oil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)

   Access oil filter from above
   From the engine bay, locate the oil filter housing on the front of the engine block (passenger side, below intake manifold). The black plastic cap is visible from above. Clean area around filter cap to prevent debris from entering.

   Remove old oil filter
   Using oil filter wrench, turn the oil filter housing cap counter-clockwise to loosen (cap size is approximately 64-76mm). Unscrew cap completely by hand. Remove old cartridge filter from housing. Check that old O-ring came out with cap and remove it. Small amount of residual oil will drain from housing.

   Install new oil filter
   Verify new filter cartridge matches old unit. Lightly coat new O-ring (provided with filter) with clean engine oil. Install new O-ring into groove on filter cap. Insert new filter cartridge into housing. Thread filter cap in by hand until contact is made, then tighten to specification with torque wrench or hand-tighten firmly plus 3/4 turn.
   ℹ️Do not over-tighten filter cap as this may damage housing or cause leaks.
   Torque spec

   Oil Filter Housing Cap25 Nm (18 lb-ft)

   Refill engine oil
   Remove oil filler cap from valve cover. Insert funnel and pour in 3.5 quarts of Honda Genuine 0W-20 oil initially. Wait 1 minute for oil to settle, then add remaining oil in small increments while checking dipstick level. Target is between lower and upper marks on dipstick when vehicle is level.

   Check for leaks and verify level
   Install oil filler cap hand-tight. Start engine and let idle for 1-2 minutes. Check underneath vehicle for leaks at drain plug and inspect filter housing for leaks. Shut off engine and wait 2-3 minutes. Check oil level with dipstick and add oil if needed to reach upper mark.
   ⚠Oil pressure light should extinguish within 2-3 seconds of starting. If light remains on, shut off engine immediately and investigate.

Reassembly

1. Lower vehicle from ramps or jack stands
2. Wipe any spilled oil from engine components and undercarriage
3. Ensure oil filler cap is securely installed

Verification

• Verify no oil leaks present at drain plug or filter housing after test run
• Confirm oil level is between lower and upper marks on dipstick with engine off and vehicle level
• Reset oil life monitor through vehicle settings menu if equipped
• Record mileage and date of oil change for maintenance records
• Properly dispose of used oil and filter at recycling facility or auto parts store
