Seat Heater Element

Replace a faulty seat heater element in the front seat cushion or backrest by removing the seat trim cover, accessing the heating pad, and installing a new element.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for SRS system to discharge
3. Move seat to full forward position for easier access to rear mounting bolts
4. Take photos of seat from multiple angles for reassembly reference
5. Test and confirm which heating element is faulty using seat heater switch and hand feel test, or use multimeter to check resistance at connector (normally 2-4 ohms)

Procedure

   Remove seat from vehicle
   Move seat to full forward position. Locate the two rear seat mounting bolts accessible from the rear of the seat rails. Remove both rear mounting bolts. Move seat to full rearward position and remove the two front mounting bolts. Tilt seat backward and disconnect the electrical connectors underneath (seat heater, seat position sensor, power seat if equipped, and airbag connectors). Remove seat from vehicle and place on a clean protected work surface.

   Remove seat trim covers
   Locate the plastic trim covers on the sides and rear of the seat. Use trim removal tools to carefully pry off side trim panels covering the seat frame. For cushion element replacement: work from the rear of the seat cushion. For backrest element replacement: work from the rear of the backrest. Identify all hog rings or J-clips securing the fabric/leather cover to the seat frame.

   Release upholstery fasteners
   Using hog ring pliers, carefully remove all hog rings securing the seat cover to the frame around the perimeter of the area being accessed. Work systematically around the seat edge. Remove any plastic clips or fasteners. Gently pull the fabric cover away from the foam padding to create access to the heating element. If working on leather seats, use heat gun on low setting to soften adhesive if present, taking care not to damage leather.

   Locate and document heating element routing
   Once the cover is partially removed, locate the heating element mat embedded in or under the foam padding. Take detailed photos of wire routing, connector locations, and how the element is positioned within the foam. The element is typically a thin carbon fiber or wire mesh pad. Note any adhesive securing the element to foam.

   Disconnect heating element electrical connector
   Trace the heating element wires to the electrical connector, typically located at the side or bottom of the seat frame. Press the connector lock tab and carefully disconnect the element from the vehicle harness. If connector is seized, apply electrical contact cleaner and gently work it loose. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage.

   Remove failed heating element
   Carefully peel the old heating element away from the foam padding. If adhesive-backed, work slowly to avoid tearing the foam. The element may be sewn into a fabric pocket or held with small clips - remove any secondary fasteners. Remove the element completely and pull wiring through any routing channels in the foam or frame. Inspect foam padding for damage and repair if necessary.

   Prepare seat for new element installation
   Clean the foam surface where the new element will sit using a lint-free cloth. Remove any old adhesive residue. Ensure the foam is dry and free of debris. Verify the new heating element matches the old element in size, shape, and connector type. Test new element resistance with multimeter if available (should read 2-4 ohms across terminals).

   Install new heating element
   Position the new heating element in the exact location as the original, using your photos as reference. If element has adhesive backing, remove protective film and press firmly into place on foam. If element has fabric pocket, insert into pocket and secure with original fasteners. Route wiring through original channels ensuring no pinch points or sharp bends. Verify element lays flat without wrinkles or folds.

   Connect heating element electrical connector
   Route the element wiring to the connection point on the seat frame. Apply small amount of dielectric grease to connector terminals. Connect the element connector to the vehicle harness, ensuring it clicks fully into place. Gently tug to verify secure connection. Verify wire routing does not interfere with seat mechanism or create pinch points.

    Reinstall seat upholstery
    Carefully pull the seat cover back over the foam padding and new heating element, ensuring the element remains in proper position and wires are not pinched. Align the cover properly with all seams in their original positions. Starting at one corner, work around the perimeter installing new hog rings or reusing original clips to secure the cover to the seat frame. Ensure even tension on the cover - not too loose or too tight. Verify all wire routing remains clear of moving parts.

    Reinstall seat trim panels
    Replace all plastic trim covers and side panels removed earlier. Ensure all clips are fully seated and panels are secure. Verify no gaps or misalignment in trim pieces.

    Reinstall seat in vehicle
    Carefully lift seat and position over mounting points in vehicle. Tilt seat forward and reconnect all electrical connectors (seat heater, position sensor, power seat if equipped, and airbag connectors). Ensure each connector clicks securely. Move seat to full rearward position and install front mounting bolts finger-tight. Move seat to full forward position and install rear mounting bolts finger-tight. Torque all four mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern.

    Reconnect battery and clear codes
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. The airbag light and other warning lights will illuminate and may require reset. Start the vehicle and verify no new warning lights remain illuminated after initial self-check cycle completes.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all hog rings are properly installed with even cover tension to prevent premature wear
2. Verify seat moves freely in all directions without binding or unusual noises
3. Confirm all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
4. Check that seat belt buckle and airbag warning labels are visible and properly positioned

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
• Activate seat heater switch and verify indicator light illuminates on dash or switch
• Allow seat heater to operate for 5-10 minutes and verify heat is distributed evenly across the seat surface by hand
• Test seat heater on all heat settings (low, medium, high if equipped)
• Verify no airbag warning lights remain illuminated after initial startup sequence
• Check that seat adjustments (fore/aft, recline) operate normally without interference
• Inspect seat cover for proper fit with no wrinkles, gaps, or misalignment
