Parts

  • Shift cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Cable grommet (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Retaining clips (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Chock rear wheels for additional safety
  3. Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for SRS system to discharge
  5. Remove center console trim and shifter boot to access shifter assembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove shifter assembly trim
Remove the shift knob by pulling upward firmly. Remove the center console side panels using panel removal tools. Remove cover screws securing the shifter trim plate and lift the trim plate to access the cable connection.

  2. 2
    Disconnect cable at shifter
Locate the shift cable end at the shifter mechanism. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the cable end off the shifter ball joint. Remove the cable bracket bolts securing the cable to the shifter assembly using a 10mm socket.
    Torque spec
    Cable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Access engine compartment cable routing
Open hood and locate the shift cable where it enters the firewall near the brake master cylinder. Note the cable routing path for reinstallation. Remove any cable retaining clips along the routing path using needle-nose pliers.
  4. 4
    Remove firewall grommet
From the engine compartment side, carefully pull the cable grommet from the firewall. The grommet may require rotation and steady pulling to release. Inspect grommet for damage and replace if cracked or torn.
  5. 5
    Access transmission cable connection
Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle. Remove the engine undercover if equipped. Locate the shift cable connection at the transmission shift lever on the driver's side of the transmission.
  6. 6
    Disconnect cable at transmission
Place the transmission shift lever in Park position. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the cable end off the transmission shift lever ball stud. Note the orientation of the cable end for reinstallation.
Do not damage the transmission shift lever seal during cable removal
  7. 7
    Remove cable bracket at transmission
Remove the cable bracket mounting bolts securing the cable bracket to the transmission housing using a 12mm socket. Carefully withdraw the cable from the bracket.
    Torque spec

    Remove cable from vehicle
Working from both the interior and engine compartment, carefully pull the shift cable through the firewall. Note the cable routing path, any mounting points, and the orientation of all grommets and seals for reinstallation.
  9. 9
    Install new cable through firewall
Route the new shift cable from the interior through the firewall, ensuring the grommet seats properly in the firewall opening. From the engine compartment, ensure the grommet is fully seated and weathertight. Route the cable following the original path noted during removal.
  10. 10
    Connect cable at transmission
Install the cable bracket to the transmission housing and secure with mounting bolts. Ensure the transmission shift lever is in Park position, then snap the cable end onto the shift lever ball stud until it clicks into place.
