This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the steering damper on a 2018-2024 Honda Accord with the 1.5L turbo engine.

Warnings

Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely solely on a hydraulic jack.
Do not start the engine or turn the steering wheel with the damper disconnected, as this may cause erratic steering behavior.
ℹ️This vehicle uses electric power steering and does not require fluid service for this repair.

Parts

  • Steering damper assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering damper mounting hardware × 1 — Often included with damper assembly

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Raise front of vehicle using lift or floor jack
  4. Support vehicle securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
  5. Remove front wheels to improve access if needed (optional but recommended)
  6. Turn steering wheel to center position and lock in place

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate steering damper
Position yourself under the front of the vehicle. The steering damper is mounted to the steering rack assembly and subframe. It resembles a small shock absorber connected between the steering rack pinion housing and the subframe or body structure. Use a work light to clearly identify the damper and its mounting points.
  2. 2
    Remove lower damper mounting bolt
Locate the lower mounting bolt that secures the damper to the subframe or mounting bracket. Using the appropriate socket, remove this bolt completely. Support the damper with one hand to prevent it from dropping once the bolt is removed.
  3. 3
    Remove upper damper mounting bolt
Locate the upper mounting bolt that secures the damper to the steering rack pinion housing. Remove this bolt completely. The damper should now be free from the vehicle. Note the orientation of the damper and any washers or spacers for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Inspect mounting points
Examine both mounting points on the steering rack and subframe for damage, wear, or corrosion. Check mounting holes for elongation or cracking. Inspect the steering rack boot for tears or damage. Clean mounting surfaces with a wire brush if necessary to ensure proper fitment of the new damper.
  5. 5
Install new steering damper upper mount
Position the new steering damper with the correct orientation (piston rod typically faces upward toward the rack). Insert the upper mounting bolt through the damper eye and into the steering rack pinion housing. Thread the bolt by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Do not fully tighten yet.

    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  6. 6
Install new steering damper lower mount
Align the lower damper eye with the subframe or bracket mounting point. Insert the lower mounting bolt and thread by hand. Ensure any washers or spacers are in their original positions. Do not fully tighten yet.

    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Torque damper mounting bolts
Using a torque wrench, tighten both the upper and lower damper mounting bolts to specification. Tighten the upper bolt first, then the lower bolt. Verify both bolts are secure and the damper moves freely through its range of motion without binding.

    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Reinstall wheels if removed
If front wheels were removed, reinstall them onto the wheel hubs. Thread all lug nuts by hand first to prevent cross-threading. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench to specification.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts129 Nm (95 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Lower vehicle from jack stands carefully
  2. Perform final torque check on wheel lug nuts with vehicle on ground if wheels were removed
  3. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock slowly while stationary to verify damper operation
  • Listen for any unusual noises from the steering damper area
  • Perform a test drive at low speed and verify smooth steering operation without vibration or harshness
  • Visually inspect damper mounting bolts for proper torque and no looseness
  • Check that steering returns to center properly after turns
