Replace or reprogram the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on a 2018-2024 Honda Accord 1.5L Turbo with CVT transmission. This procedure involves accessing the module located in the engine bay and performing necessary initialization procedures.

Warnings

TCM must be programmed to the vehicle VIN using Honda Diagnostic System after installation. Failure to do so will result in transmission malfunction.
Ensure engine and transmission are cool before beginning work to prevent burns from hot components.
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may trigger window/sunroof relearn procedures.
⚠️Never disconnect the TCM connector with the ignition on or engine running as this may damage the module or transmission.

Parts

  • Transmission Control Module (TCM) × 1 — Use OEM Honda TCM specific to VIN
  • Electrical connector seals (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
  3. Allow engine and transmission to cool completely (minimum 30 minutes after operation)
  4. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  5. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  6. Locate the TCM on the driver's side of the engine bay, mounted to the inner fender near the battery box

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove air intake components for access
Remove the engine cover by pulling upward on the cover to release the clips. Loosen the air intake duct clamp at the throttle body and remove the air intake tube to improve access to the TCM mounting area. Set components aside in a clean location.
  2. 2
    Locate and identify TCM
The TCM is a black rectangular module mounted to the driver's side inner fender panel, near the battery. It has a large multi-pin connector on the bottom. Verify you have located the correct module by checking the part number label on the side of the unit.
  3. 3
    Disconnect TCM electrical connector
Press down on the red locking tab of the main TCM connector while carefully pulling the connector straight down away from the module. Do not pull on the wires. The connector is keyed and should release with moderate force. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion or damage.
Handle connector carefully to avoid bending pins. Bent pins will cause transmission control issues and may require connector replacement.
  4. 4
    Remove TCM mounting hardware
Remove the three 10mm bolts securing the TCM to the fender bracket. Support the module with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling. The bolts are approximately 25-30mm in length.
  5. 5
    Remove TCM from vehicle
Carefully lift the TCM up and out of the mounting bracket. Note the orientation of the module for installation of the replacement unit. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or corrosion. Clean mounting surfaces if necessary.
  6. 6
    Prepare new TCM for installation
Remove the new TCM from protective packaging. Verify the part number matches the original unit and is correct for your vehicle VIN. Transfer any mounting brackets from the old module to the new one if required. Inspect the connector seal on the new TCM for proper seating.
  7. 7
    Install replacement TCM
Position the new TCM in the mounting bracket in the same orientation as the original. Align the mounting holes and start all three 10mm mounting bolts by hand. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern to ensure even clamping. Final torque is hand-tight plus 1/4 turn (approximately 8-10 Nm).
  8. 8
    Reconnect TCM electrical connector
Align the TCM connector with the module ensuring the keying tab is properly positioned. Press the connector firmly onto the module until you hear and feel the red locking tab click into place. Gently pull on the connector to verify it is fully locked. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal if desired for corrosion protection.
  9. 9
    Reinstall air intake components
Reinstall the air intake tube to the throttle body and tighten the clamp securely. Ensure the tube is fully seated and there are no air leaks. Reinstall the engine cover by aligning the clips and pressing down firmly until all clips engage.
  10. 10
Reconnect battery and perform TCM initialization
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) or compatible scan tool to the OBD-II port. Follow the scan tool prompts to program the TCM to the vehicle VIN, transfer transmission adaptive values if applicable, and perform the TCM initialization procedure as outlined in Honda service procedures.
⚠️TCM programming must be completed before starting the engine. Operating the vehicle with an unprogrammed TCM will cause transmission failure.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify air intake system is properly connected with no loose clamps
  3. Double-check that all tools and parts are removed from engine bay
  4. Confirm engine cover is properly seated on all mounting points

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify no warning lights remain illuminated on the instrument cluster after initial bulb check
  • Start the engine and allow it to idle. Transmission warning light should extinguish within 5 seconds
  • Using scan tool, verify no DTCs are present in the TCM
  • Perform a test drive including all gear ranges. Transmission should shift smoothly with no hesitation or harsh engagement
  • Monitor transmission behavior for the first 50-100 miles as the TCM relearns adaptive values
  • If transmission shifts remain abnormal after 20 miles of varied driving, perform the CVT fluid level check and verify proper fill level
  • Verify all warning lights are off and scan for codes after test drive
