This procedure covers cleaning or replacing battery terminals on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic with 1.5L turbo engine, ensuring proper electrical connection and preventing starting or charging issues.
Warnings
⚠️Always disconnect negative terminal first and reconnect it last to prevent short circuits
⚠Radio presets and clock will be lost. Some vehicles may require radio code re-entry
⚠On some models, power window auto-up/down feature may need reinitialization after battery disconnect
ℹ️Battery is located in the engine bay on the passenger side

Parts
- Battery terminal (positive and/or negative as needed) × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and turn off ignition
- Remove key from ignition and ensure all electrical accessories are off
- Open hood and locate battery on passenger side of engine bay
- Identify positive (red cover) and negative (black, grounded to body) terminals
- If corrosion is heavy, prepare baking soda and water solution for cleaning
Procedure
- 1Disconnect negative battery terminalUsing a 10mm wrench, loosen the negative (black) battery terminal bolt. Remove the terminal from the battery post and position it away from the battery to prevent accidental contact. Do not allow the terminal to touch the battery post during the repair.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Disconnect positive battery terminalRemove the red plastic cover from the positive terminal. Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the positive terminal bolt and remove the terminal from the battery post. Keep it separated from the negative terminal and any metal surfaces.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 3Inspect terminals and postsExamine battery posts and cable terminals for corrosion, damage, or excessive wear. White or blue-green powdery residue indicates corrosion. Check cable insulation for cracks or damage. If terminals are severely corroded, cracked, or stripped, replacement is necessary.⚠Corrosion powder can irritate skin and eyes. Avoid direct contact
- 4Clean battery postsUsing a wire brush or battery post cleaner, thoroughly clean both positive and negative battery posts. Remove all corrosion and oxidation until the metal is shiny. For heavy corrosion, apply baking soda solution, let it fizz, then scrub and rinse with clean water. Dry completely before proceeding.
- 5Clean or replace battery terminalsIf cleaning: Use wire brush or terminal cleaner to thoroughly clean the inside of both cable terminals until shiny metal is visible. If replacing: Cut off old terminals and install new terminals onto battery cables following terminal manufacturer's instructions. Ensure cables are fully inserted into terminals and crimped or secured properly.
- 6Reconnect positive battery terminalPlace the positive (red) terminal onto the positive battery post. Ensure it is fully seated and cannot rotate. Tighten the terminal bolt to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this can crack the terminal or damage the battery post. Replace the red protective cover over the positive terminal.⚠Overtightening can crack the battery terminal or strip threadsTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 7Reconnect negative battery terminalPlace the negative (black) terminal onto the negative battery post. Ensure it is fully seated and properly aligned. Tighten the terminal bolt to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft). A small spark may occur when making final connection, which is normal.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 8Apply corrosion protectionSpray battery terminal anti-corrosion spray or apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the outside of both terminals and the top of the battery posts. This helps prevent future corrosion. Do not apply grease between post and terminal contact surfaces.
Reassembly
- Ensure both terminals are tight and cannot be rotated by hand
- Verify positive terminal protective cover is in place
- Check that no tools or materials are left in engine bay
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (do not start). Verify dashboard lights illuminate normally
- Start the engine and verify it cranks and starts normally
- Check that no warning lights remain on after startup
- Test electrical accessories (radio, windows, lights) for proper operation
- Reinitialize power window auto-up/down if necessary: Lower window fully, then pull up and hold switch for 2 seconds after window closes
- Reset clock and radio presets as needed
