The 2008 Odyssey is a solid family hauler with one catastrophic weakness: the 5-speed automatic transmission. When it fails (and many do), it's expensive enough to total the vehicle. The 3.5L V6 also has a documented VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) oil consumption issue that can lead to engine failure if ignored.
5-Speed Automatic Transmission Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Harsh shifting or flaring between 2nd and 3rd gear, Slipping under acceleration, especially when cold, Check engine light with P0730, P0741, or P0740 codes, Burnt transmission fluid smell, dark or metallic fluid
Fix: Rebuild or replacement required. Factory reman is $3,500-4,000 plus 8-12 hours labor for R&R. Aftermarket rebuilds slightly cheaper but quality varies. Cooler line failure can accelerate this—many shops now replace cooler lines preventively during transmission service. No Band-Aid fix exists once slipping starts.
Estimated cost: $4,500-6,500
VCM-Related Oil Consumption and Engine Damage
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 100,000-180,000 mi
Symptoms: Burning 1+ quart of oil every 1,000 miles, Check engine light with misfire codes (P0300-P0306), Rough idle or vibration when VCM activates (3-cylinder mode), Spark plugs fouled with oil, visible smoke from exhaust
Fix: VCM system causes piston ring wear on cylinders 1, 2, and 4. Early catch: VCM Muzzler device ($300-450 installed) disables the system and stops progression. Late stage requires engine rebuild—pistons, rings, honing, valve seals—15-20 hours labor. Some owners run it low on oil and spin bearings, requiring short block replacement. Monitor oil religiously on these.
Estimated cost: $4,000-7,500
Power Sliding Door Motor and Cable Failures
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Door stops mid-operation, beeps repeatedly, Manual open/close works, but power function is dead, Clicking or grinding noise from door track, Error message on dash: 'Power door problem'
Fix: Cable fraying or motor gear wear. If cable is the issue, 2-3 hours per side to replace cable assembly ($150-250 parts). Motor replacement adds another $300-400 in parts, similar labor. Both doors often fail within 20k miles of each other. Cleaning and re-greasing the tracks every 30k miles helps longevity but doesn't prevent eventual failure.
Estimated cost: $400-900
Motor Mount Failures (Especially Front and Transmission)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk or thud when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Excessive vibration at idle, especially with A/C on, Engine rocks visibly when accelerating hard, Steering wheel vibration during takeoff
Fix: The hydraulic front mount and transmission mount fail most often. Front mount is 1.5-2 hours ($180-250 parts). Transmission mount is 2-3 hours due to access ($120-180 parts). Many shops replace all three mounts at once (front, trans, rear) for about 4-5 hours total labor. OEM Honda mounts last much longer than aftermarket.
Estimated cost: $500-900
Starter Motor Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 120,000-180,000 mi
Symptoms: Click-click-click but engine won't crank (battery is good), Intermittent no-start, often when engine is hot, Grinding noise during start attempt, Starts fine when cold, fails after short trips
Fix: Starter solenoid contacts wear out. Replacement is 1.5-2 hours due to tight engine bay access—must remove intake manifold brace and work from underneath. OEM starter $250-350, aftermarket $120-200. Heat soak from the V6 accelerates failure. Not a hard job but annoying access.
Estimated cost: $350-600
Rear Differential Fluid Leak
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 100,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Drips or stains on driveway under rear axle area, Whining or humming noise from rear during acceleration, Low differential fluid level on inspection
Fix: Pinion seal or axle seals leak. Pinion seal replacement is 2-3 hours (drain, remove driveshaft, press out old seal, reinstall). Axle seals are 1-1.5 hours each but less common. If caught early, just reseal. If run low, bearing damage occurs and diff requires rebuild (8+ hours, $1,500+ parts). Check fluid every 30k miles.
Estimated cost: $300-600
Owner tips
Change transmission fluid every 30,000 miles with Honda ATF-Z1 (not DW-1)—this is critical and can extend transmission life significantly
Disable VCM early with a Muzzler or tuner if you plan to keep the vehicle past 100k miles—it's cheaper than an engine rebuild
Grease power door tracks and rollers every oil change; this single step prevents 80% of door motor failures
Inspect motor mounts annually after 60k miles; replacing them before they fully fail prevents transmission mount damage and driveline stress
Check oil level every other fill-up after 100k miles—VCM engines can go from full to dangerously low in 2,000 miles without warning
Buy one under 80k miles with documented transmission services and plan to address VCM oil consumption—or walk away if transmission has already been replaced once.
