The 2006 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a 420-hp sledgehammer built on a platform never designed for that kind of power. The 6.1L Hemi is generally stout, but the NAG1 transmission, cooling system, and drivetrain mounts take a beating—especially if previous owners launched it hard or towed beyond its limits.
NAG1 Transmission Overheating & Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission slipping or delayed engagement when hot, Burnt ATF smell, Limp mode after sustained highway driving or towing, Metal debris in pan during fluid service
Fix: External cooler lines corrode and leak, or the internal radiator cooler fails and cross-contaminates coolant and ATF. If caught early, replace the cooler and flush both systems (3-4 hours). If ignored, the trans needs a rebuild or replacement (12-16 hours for R&R and rebuild).
Estimated cost: $800-1,200 for cooler/lines; $3,500-5,500 for full rebuild
Transmission & Transfer Case Mounts Torn or Collapsed
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk on hard acceleration or deceleration, Excessive vibration at idle in gear, Visible drivetrain movement when rocking vehicle in park, Gear lever feels loose or notchy
Fix: The rubber isolators can't handle repeated full-throttle launches and degrade quickly. Trans mount is about 2 hours, transfer case mount another 1.5 hours. Do them together while you're under there.
Estimated cost: $400-700 for both mounts
Valve Seat Recession & Dropped Valve Seats (High-Mile or Abused)
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 100,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Sudden catastrophic misfire, Metal-on-metal noise from cylinder head, Coolant in oil or oil in coolant if seat damage punctures into water jacket, Bent pushrods or rocker arm failure
Fix: The 6.1L uses cast-iron heads but valve seat insert quality varies. If a seat drops, it destroys the piston, cylinder wall, and sometimes the crank. Best case is head removal, machining, and new valvetrain (16-20 hours per side). Worst case is full short block replacement (30-40 hours).
Estimated cost: $3,500-6,000 for head rebuild; $8,000-12,000 for short block
MDS Lifter Failure (Multi-Displacement System)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Ticking or tapping noise from engine, especially on cold start, Check engine light with misfire codes on cylinders 1, 4, 6, or 7, Rough idle that smooths out above 2,000 RPM, Metal shavings in oil
Fix: The MDS solenoids and lifters stick or collapse, starving valves of proper lift. Requires intake manifold removal, new lifters, and often cam replacement if lobes are scored (12-16 hours). Many techs disable MDS with a tuner to prevent repeat failures.
Estimated cost: $2,000-3,500
Fuel Pump & Filter Clogging (In-Tank Design)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Hesitation or stumble under heavy acceleration, No-start or extended crank, Fuel pressure drops off under load, Whining noise from rear of vehicle
Fix: The in-tank filter isn't serviceable separately—whole pump module must be replaced. Tank drop or bed removal required (3-4 hours). High-performance driving accelerates debris accumulation.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
Rear Differential Pinion Bearing Wear
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Whining or howling from rear, proportional to speed, Clunking on throttle lift, Gear oil leaking from pinion seal, Hot differential smell after highway driving
Fix: The pinion bearing preload loosens over time, especially with aggressive launches. Requires differential teardown, bearing replacement, and gear pattern setup (6-8 hours). If the ring and pinion are scored, add another $800-1,200 in parts.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,000
Owner tips
Change transmission fluid every 30,000 miles with Mopar ATF+4—not 'lifetime' fluid as Chrysler claims
Install an auxiliary trans cooler if towing or tracking; the factory setup is marginal
Disable MDS with a tune if you're keeping the truck long-term; saves lifters and improves throttle response
Inspect motor and trans mounts every oil change after 60k—they wear faster than any other SUV I've worked on
Use top-tier fuel and keep the tank above 1/4 to prolong fuel pump life
Buy one if you can wrench or budget $2k/year for surprises—it's a parts-bin hot rod that rewards enthusiasts but punishes the unprepared.

Every control module on the 2006-2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 — where it lives, replacement time, and what it takes to program a replacement. Modules marked dealer / factory tool won't work after a part swap alone — budget for programming.
⚠️ VIN and mileage programming required. Mileage must be transferred from old cluster or documented per federal law.

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key.
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.
POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE) · 13V175000

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.
