The 2007 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a high-performance SUV with the potent 6.1L Hemi, but it's plagued by catastrophic engine failures from valve seat recession and transmission cooling problems that can destroy the drivetrain if ignored.
Valve Seat Recession / Engine Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Severe misfires on multiple cylinders, Loss of compression, Metal debris in oil, Clattering noise from cylinder head, Check engine light with P0300-series codes
Fix: The 6.1L Hemi suffers from valve seats dropping out of the heads, especially on cylinders 3 and 5. Once it starts, metal contaminates the entire engine. Requires complete engine rebuild with hardened seat inserts, or short block replacement if bearings are scored. Budget 40-50 labor hours for full rebuild.
Estimated cost: $8,000-15,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Pink milkshake in coolant reservoir, Transmission slipping or delayed engagement, Overheating transmission, Coolant loss with no external leaks, Trans fluid in radiator
Fix: The internal trans cooler in the radiator fails, allowing coolant and ATF to mix. This destroys the transmission within days if driven. Requires new radiator, complete transmission flush or rebuild, and coolant system flush. If caught early (just cooler leak), 8-10 hours. If trans is damaged, add 15-20 hours for rebuild.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,500 (cooler only), $4,000-6,500 (with trans rebuild)
Transmission Mount Failure
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Severe clunk when shifting from Park to Drive, Vibration at idle in gear, Visible engine movement when revving, Chassis shudder on acceleration
Fix: The NAG1 transmission mount tears from the torque of the 6.1L. Allows excessive drivetrain movement that accelerates wear on driveshaft and transfer case. Replace all engine and trans mounts as a set. 3-4 labor hours.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
Fuel Pump / Filter Clogging
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Hesitation or stumble under hard acceleration, Loss of power above 4,000 RPM, Long cranking before start, Lean codes (P0171/P0174), Fuel pressure drops under load
Fix: High fuel demands of the SRT8 expose marginal fuel systems. In-tank filter sock clogs, and pump weakens. Requires fuel tank drop and pump module replacement. 4-5 labor hours.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Piston Ring Land Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 100,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 500-1,000 miles), Blue smoke on startup or deceleration, Loss of power, Low compression on one or more cylinders, Fouled spark plugs
Fix: Piston ring lands crack on the 6.1L, especially if engine has seen detonation or sustained high RPM. Requires complete teardown, new pistons and rings minimum, honing cylinders. Often discovered during valve seat repairs. 35-45 labor hours for full rebuild.
Estimated cost: $7,000-12,000
Rear Differential Bushing Wear
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking from rear on acceleration/deceleration, Vibration at highway speeds, Wandering rear end feel, Visible differential movement
Fix: The torque from the Hemi tears out the rear diff mounting bushings. Allows axle to shift under load, creating driveline vibrations. Replace all four diff bushings. 3-4 labor hours.
Estimated cost: $500-900
Owner tips
Replace the transmission cooler BEFORE it fails — install an external unit and bypass the radiator cooler entirely around 50,000 miles.
Use premium fuel religiously and keep carbon buildup under control to prevent detonation that accelerates valve seat and piston issues.
Monitor oil consumption closely after 80,000 miles — more than 1 quart per 2,000 miles means ring or valve guide problems are starting.
Budget $1,000/year for the 'SRT8 tax' — these are maintenance-intensive performance vehicles, not regular Jeeps.
Only buy if you have a $10K emergency fund and can accept that catastrophic engine failure is more 'when' than 'if' — thrilling when running, financially devastating when it grenades.

⚠️ VIN and mileage programming required. Mileage must be transferred from old cluster or documented per federal law.

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key.
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.
