Airbag - Driver

This procedure removes and replaces the driver airbag module in the steering wheel of a 2017 Maserati Levante, including proper battery disconnection, airbag system deactivation, and verification.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface, set parking brake, and ensure ignition is OFF
2. Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position
3. Remove any jewelry, watches, or metal bracelets to prevent accidental short circuits
4. Locate negative battery terminal in engine compartment
5. Ensure replacement airbag module is the correct part number for your vehicle VIN
6. Prepare clean, flat workspace at least 3 feet from vehicle to place removed airbag face-up

Procedure

1. 1

   Disconnect battery and wait for capacitor discharge
   Open hood and locate battery in engine compartment. Using 10mm socket, loosen and remove negative battery terminal bolt. Remove negative cable from battery post and secure away from terminal to prevent accidental reconnection. Set timer and wait MINIMUM 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to fully discharge. Do not proceed until full 2 minutes have elapsed.
   ⚠️The 2-minute wait is MANDATORY. Proceeding early risks airbag deployment and severe injury.

   Access airbag module mounting bolts
   From behind steering wheel, locate two Torx T30 access holes on left and right sides of steering wheel hub. These holes provide access to the airbag module retaining bolts. On Levante models, access holes may have small rubber plugs that need to be removed first. Use trim tool to carefully pry out plugs if present.

   Remove airbag module retaining bolts
   Insert Torx T30 socket through each access hole and locate the airbag module mounting bolt. Turn each bolt counterclockwise to remove. There are typically 2 bolts (one on each side). Place bolts in magnetic tray and inspect threads for damage. If threads are damaged or bolts are corroded, replace with new OEM bolts.

   Carefully pull airbag module from steering wheel
   With both bolts removed, gently pull airbag module straight toward you away from steering wheel hub. Module should release with light pressure. If resistance is felt, verify both bolts are fully removed and check for any additional clips. Do not force or pry. Module will pull out approximately 2-3 inches to expose wiring connector on back.
   ⚠Support airbag module weight with both hands. Do not let it hang by wiring harness.

   Disconnect airbag electrical connector
   With airbag module pulled out, locate the yellow airbag connector on back of module. Identify the connector locking tab (typically red or yellow safety clip). Press locking tab and carefully separate connector halves. Note connector orientation for reassembly. Inspect connector pins for damage, corrosion, or bent pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
   ⚠Never pull on wires. Always grasp connector body firmly when disconnecting.

   Remove old airbag module
   With connector disconnected, fully remove airbag module from vehicle. Immediately place module face-UP on clean, flat surface in prepared workspace away from traffic areas. Never place airbag face-down as deployment force could project module upward. Keep removed airbag at least 3 feet from work area. Inspect steering wheel hub mounting points for damage or cracks.
   ⚠️Deployed or undeployed airbag modules must be disposed of properly per local regulations. Contact dealer or hazardous waste facility.

   Inspect steering wheel components
   With airbag removed, inspect steering wheel hub, clock spring connector (typically green connector visible behind airbag location), and mounting surfaces. Check clock spring for any signs of damage, broken wires, or contamination. Verify horn contacts are clean and undamaged. Do not rotate steering wheel with airbag removed as this may damage clock spring.
   ⚠If clock spring shows any damage, it must be replaced before installing new airbag. Do not attempt repair.

   Prepare new airbag module
   Remove new airbag module from packaging. Verify part number matches original and is correct for vehicle VIN. Inspect new module for any shipping damage. Locate electrical connector on back of new module and verify connector pins are straight and undamaged. Remove any protective covers from connector.

   Connect electrical connector to new airbag
   Align yellow airbag connector from vehicle harness with connector on back of new airbag module. Match connector orientation noted during disassembly. Push connector halves together firmly until locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Verify no wires are pinched or stressed.
   ⚠Ensure connector is fully locked. Partial connection will cause airbag warning light and may prevent deployment.

    Install airbag module to steering wheel
    Carefully guide new airbag module into steering wheel hub, routing wiring harness to avoid pinching. Align mounting holes in airbag module with threaded holes in steering wheel hub. Press module firmly against hub to seat properly. Ensure module sits flush against steering wheel with no gaps.

    Install and torque airbag retaining bolts
    Insert airbag module retaining bolts through access holes into mounting holes. Start both bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Using Torx T30 socket and torque wrench, tighten each bolt to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). Alternate between bolts, tightening gradually to ensure even seating. Verify final torque on both bolts.
    ⚠️CRITICAL: Exact torque specification is essential for proper airbag deployment. Over-torquing can crack module housing; under-torquing can allow movement during deployment.

    Reinstall access hole plugs
    If rubber access hole plugs were removed in step 2, press them firmly back into place in steering wheel hub. Ensure plugs are fully seated to maintain appearance and prevent debris entry.

    Reconnect battery
    Return to engine compartment and reconnect negative battery cable to negative battery terminal. Using 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten battery terminal bolt to 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). Ensure connection is secure and terminal cannot rotate on post.

    Clear airbag system codes and verify operation
    Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Observe airbag warning light on instrument cluster. Light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds during bulb check, then extinguish. If light remains on, flashes, or does not illuminate, a fault exists and must be diagnosed with proper scan tool. Do not operate vehicle until airbag system is verified functional.
    ⚠️If airbag warning light remains on or behaves abnormally, STOP and seek professional diagnosis. Vehicle is unsafe to drive with airbag system malfunction.

Reassembly

1. Verify airbag module is flush-mounted with no gaps around perimeter
2. Confirm both retaining bolts are torqued to specification and access holes are plugged
3. Test horn function by pressing center of airbag module gently
4. Verify steering wheel controls (if equipped) function properly

Verification

• Airbag warning light performs normal 6-second bulb check and then extinguishes completely
• Horn functions normally when airbag module center is pressed
• No unusual gaps, rattles, or movement in airbag module
• Steering wheel controls operate normally (cruise, audio, phone)
• If possible, verify with professional scan tool that no airbag system faults are stored
• Schedule professional scan tool verification if airbag light behavior is uncertain
