Replace the blower motor control module that regulates HVAC fan speed and operation, located in the HVAC housing behind the glove box.

Warnings

The blower motor control module contains heat-sensitive electronics. Do not expose to excessive heat or impact during removal.
ℹ️Wait at least 2 minutes after battery disconnect before working on electrical components to allow capacitors to discharge.
The HVAC housing is made of plastic and can crack if excessive force is applied. Work carefully when releasing mounting tabs.

Parts

  • Blower motor control module × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Push-type retainer clips × 5 — As needed for replacement

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key fob from vehicle interior
  3. Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal
  4. Allow 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  5. Adjust steering wheel to lowest position for better access
  6. Set front seats to full rearward position

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery
Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay. Use a 10mm socket to loosen and remove the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable and secure it away from the battery post to prevent accidental reconnection.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove lower glove box assembly
Open the glove box fully. Locate the two damper arms on each side of the glove box and squeeze them inward to release them from their mounting points. Continue opening the glove box past its normal stop point. Remove the T25 Torx screws securing the glove box hinge (typically 4 screws). Carefully lower and remove the entire glove box assembly.
  3. 3
    Remove lower dashboard panel
With the glove box removed, locate the lower dashboard panel on the passenger side. Use trim removal tools to carefully pry out the push-type retainer clips securing the panel (typically 4-6 clips along the edges). Disconnect any electrical connectors for lights or sensors. Remove the panel to expose the HVAC housing.
  4. 4
    Access blower motor control module
Locate the blower motor control module mounted on the HVAC housing, typically on the lower right side near the blower motor. The module will have a multi-pin electrical connector and cooling fins visible. Use a flashlight to identify mounting fasteners and connector location.
  5. 5
    Disconnect electrical connector
Locate the wiring harness connector attached to the blower motor control module. Press the locking tab or release mechanism (typically a sliding lock or press tab) and carefully pull the connector straight off the module. Avoid twisting or bending connector pins.
Do not force the electrical connector. Ensure the locking tab is fully released before pulling to avoid breaking connector pins.
  6. 6
    Remove ground connection if present
Check if the blower motor control module has a separate ground strap or ground wire connection. If present, use a 10mm socket to remove the ground bolt and disconnect the ground strap. Note the position for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt14 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove module mounting fasteners
Locate the mounting bolts or screws securing the blower motor control module to the HVAC housing (typically 2-3 fasteners). Use the appropriate Torx driver or socket to remove these fasteners. Keep track of any brackets or spacers that may be present.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Extract control module
Carefully pull the blower motor control module away from the HVAC housing. If there is thermal paste or a thermal pad between the module and housing, gently work the module free. Note the orientation and position of the module for correct installation of the replacement.
  9. 9
    Prepare mounting surface
Inspect the HVAC housing mounting surface where the module was attached. Remove any old thermal paste or debris using a clean, lint-free cloth. If the module uses a thermal pad, ensure the mounting surface is clean and dry. Check that mounting tabs and screw holes are not damaged.
  10. 10
    Install new control module
Position the new blower motor control module in the correct orientation, aligning the mounting holes with the HVAC housing. If the module includes a new thermal pad, remove the protective backing before installation. Insert and hand-tighten the mounting bolts, then torque to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even contact.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect ground and electrical connections
If a ground strap is present, clean both the ground contact surface on the module and the mounting point. Reconnect the ground strap and torque the ground bolt to specification. Connect the main wiring harness connector to the module, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place securely.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt14 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall dashboard components
Reinstall the lower dashboard panel by reconnecting any electrical connectors and pressing the push-type retainer clips back into place. Ensure all clips are fully seated. Reinstall the glove box assembly by positioning it into the hinge points and installing the T25 Torx screws. Reconnect the damper arms to their mounting points and verify smooth glove box operation.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery
Return to the engine bay and reconnect the negative battery terminal to the battery post. Install the terminal bolt and torque to specification. Ensure the connection is secure but do not overtighten to avoid damaging the battery post or terminal.
Do not exceed the specified torque value for battery terminal bolts as overtightening can damage the battery post or terminal clamp.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all dashboard panels and trim pieces are securely fastened with no gaps
  2. Ensure glove box opens and closes smoothly with dampers properly engaged
  3. Confirm all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  4. Check that no tools or parts were left in the dashboard cavity

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine and verify no warning lights related to HVAC system appear
  • Start the engine and test blower motor operation at all speed settings (1-4 or variable speeds)
  • Verify smooth transitions between fan speeds with no unusual noises or hesitation
  • Test blower motor in all vent modes (floor, panel, defrost, mixed) to ensure proper operation
  • Check that fan speed responds correctly to climate control adjustments
  • If equipped with automatic climate control, verify AUTO mode functions correctly and fan speed modulates appropriately
  • Listen for any clicking, buzzing, or grinding noises from the blower motor area that might indicate improper module installation
