Electric Power Steering Module

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) control module on the 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo RWD.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn steering wheel to center position and note alignment
3. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait minimum 15 minutes
4. Document or photograph steering wheel position and any adaptive steering settings with diagnostic tool
5. Ensure replacement module part number matches original exactly
6. Have Maserati diagnostic tool available for post-installation programming

Procedure

   Access steering column area
   Remove lower dashboard trim panels below steering column using trim removal tools. Remove knee bolster panel by removing mounting screws. Carefully disconnect any electrical connectors for courtesy lights or diagnostic port as needed.

   Remove steering column covers
   Remove upper and lower steering column cover screws using T30 Torx bit. Separate covers carefully to avoid breaking retaining clips. Set covers aside in clean area.

   Locate EPS control module
   The EPS module is mounted on the steering column assembly, typically located between the column and firewall. Identify the module by its large multi-pin electrical connector and mounting bracket. Note routing of all electrical connectors and harness clips.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Release the primary EPS module connector by depressing locking tab and pulling connector straight back. Disconnect secondary connectors if equipped. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage. Do not force connectors.
   ⚠Connector locking mechanisms are fragile. Apply even pressure to release tabs to avoid breaking them.

   Remove module mounting fasteners
   Remove the EPS module mounting bolts securing module to steering column bracket. Support module weight while removing final fastener. Note orientation and position of any spacers or washers.

   Remove EPS control module
   Carefully slide EPS module away from steering column assembly. Maneuver module through available space in dash area. Avoid contact with sharp edges that could damage electrical connectors or module housing.

   Inspect mounting area and connectors
   Inspect steering column mounting bracket for cracks or damage. Check all electrical connector pins in vehicle harness for bent pins, corrosion, or damage. Clean connector housings with electrical contact cleaner if needed. Inspect connector seals and replace if damaged.

   Install new EPS control module
   Position new EPS module onto steering column bracket ensuring proper alignment with mounting holes. Verify module is oriented correctly and harness routing will not cause interference with steering column movement or other components.
   ⚠Ensure module is properly grounded and all mounting surfaces are clean and free of corrosion.

   Install mounting fasteners
   Install EPS module mounting bolts with any required spacers or washers in original positions. Tighten bolts in cross pattern to ensure even clamping pressure. Torque to specification using torque wrench.

    Connect electrical connectors
    Connect primary EPS module connector ensuring it fully seats and locking tab clicks into place. Connect any secondary connectors. Gently tug on connectors to verify secure connection. Ensure harness routing matches original configuration and will not interfere with steering column operation.

    Reinstall steering column covers
    Position lower steering column cover and align with upper cover. Install cover screws and tighten to specification. Ensure covers are properly seated and all retaining clips are engaged.

    Reinstall dashboard trim
    Reconnect any electrical connectors for courtesy lights or diagnostic port. Install knee bolster panel and lower dashboard trim panels. Verify all clips are properly engaged and panels are secure.

    Reconnect battery and perform initial test
    Reconnect battery negative terminal. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Verify EPS warning light illuminates then extinguishes. Check for any diagnostic trouble codes using scan tool.
    ⚠️Do not attempt to drive vehicle until EPS module programming and calibration is complete.

    Program and calibrate EPS module
    Using Maserati diagnostic tool, perform EPS module programming to match vehicle VIN and configuration. Execute steering angle sensor calibration with wheels pointed straight ahead. Follow all on-screen prompts to complete initialization procedure. Clear any stored fault codes after successful programming.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim panels and covers are properly secured
2. Confirm steering column moves freely through full range of adjustment
3. Ensure no tools or parts were left in work area

Verification

• Start engine and verify EPS warning light extinguishes after bulb check
• With engine running, turn steering wheel lock-to-lock and verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises
• Test drive vehicle at low speed in safe area to verify normal power steering assist operation
• Verify steering returns to center properly and there is no pull to either side
• Scan for diagnostic trouble codes and verify no EPS-related codes are present
• Verify steering angle sensor reading matches physical steering wheel position using diagnostic tool
• Check that adaptive steering functions (if equipped) operate correctly
