HID Ballast

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a failed HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlight ballast on a 2017 Maserati Levante with 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine.

• HID Ballast Assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification - Maserati P/N 670006575 or equivalent
• Ballast mounting bracket (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
3. Allow HID system to cool for at least 10 minutes if headlights were recently operated
4. Open hood and secure with prop rod
5. Disconnect negative battery terminal and isolate cable away from battery post
6. Wait minimum 5 minutes for HID system capacitors to fully discharge
7. Identify which ballast requires replacement (driver or passenger side)
8. Take photo of ballast connections for reference during reassembly

Procedure

   Remove headlight access cover
   Locate the plastic access cover on the rear of the headlight assembly inside the engine bay. Rotate the cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull rearward to remove. Set aside in clean location.

   Disconnect ballast electrical connector
   Locate the main ballast power connector (large multi-pin connector). Press down on the locking tab and pull connector straight back from ballast. Do not pull on wires. If connector is tight, gently rock side-to-side while pulling.
   ⚠Connector pins are fragile. Do not force or use excessive side-loading pressure.

   Disconnect HID bulb connector
   Locate the high voltage connector between ballast and HID bulb (smaller connector with thick insulated cable). Depress the safety lock tab and carefully disconnect. The connector may have a secondary safety clip that must be released first.
   ⚠️Even with battery disconnected, residual high voltage may be present. Avoid touching connector pins.

   Remove ballast mounting fasteners
   Using T25 Torx bit, remove the two mounting bolts securing the ballast to its bracket. Support ballast with one hand while removing second bolt to prevent dropping. Note orientation of ballast for reinstallation.

   Remove ballast from vehicle
   Carefully extract the ballast from the headlight housing area. Guide electrical connectors through any mounting clips or routing channels. Inspect mounting bracket for damage or corrosion. Clean mounting surfaces if reusing bracket.

   Inspect and prepare mounting area
   Examine the ballast mounting bracket for cracks, stripped threads, or corrosion. Clean mounting surfaces with isopropyl alcohol if necessary. Verify no debris or moisture is present in headlight housing. Check electrical connectors for corrosion, damage, or bent pins.
   ℹ️Moisture in headlight assembly may indicate seal failure requiring separate attention.

   Position new ballast
   Route new ballast connectors through mounting clips in reverse order of removal. Position ballast onto mounting bracket ensuring correct orientation (connector side should face toward front of vehicle on Levante). Align mounting holes with bracket.

   Install ballast mounting bolts
   Thread both T25 Torx mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Once both bolts are started, torque in alternating pattern to specification using torque wrench. Verify ballast is secure and does not move when gently pulled.

   Reconnect HID bulb connector
   Connect the high voltage connector from ballast to HID bulb. Push firmly until audible click is heard. Verify secondary safety lock engages if equipped. Gently tug on connector to confirm it is fully seated and locked.
10. 10

    Reconnect ballast power connector
    Align main power connector with ballast receptacle. Push straight in until locking tab clicks into place. Ensure connector is fully seated with no gap visible. Route wiring harness in original path using any factory clips.

    Reinstall access cover
    Position headlight access cover over opening and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Ensure cover is fully seated and secure.

    Reconnect battery
    Reconnect negative battery terminal to battery post. Torque terminal bolt to specification. Ensure terminal connection is tight and cable cannot rotate on post.
    ⚠Do not overtighten battery terminal - overtorquing can damage terminal or battery post.
    Torque spec

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

1. Verify all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
2. Ensure no tools or parts are left in engine bay
3. Confirm headlight access cover is properly installed
4. All wiring should follow original routing paths and be secured in factory clips

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine) and activate headlights
• Verify affected headlight illuminates within 3-5 seconds (normal HID warm-up time)
• Check that headlight achieves full brightness within 15-20 seconds
• Cycle headlights off and on 3 times to confirm consistent operation
• Verify no warning lights appear on instrument cluster
• Inspect for proper beam pattern - light should be stable without flickering
• Confirm no burning smell or unusual sounds from ballast area
• Perform final visual inspection of all connections and mounting security
• Test high beam operation if applicable to verify full system functionality
